Anbernic Accused of Stealthy Downgrade in Handheld Gaming Devices

A recent controversy has emerged around Anbernic, a company renowned for its nostalgic handheld gaming consoles, as consumers allege a covert reduction in the memory specifications of its products. This situation, involving discrepancies in RAM quantity and type compared to advertised features, casts a shadow on the company's transparency and highlights growing concerns within the gaming hardware sector regarding product value amidst a prevailing 'memory crisis'.

Anbernic's Handhelds Under Scrutiny for Unannounced Memory Changes

In a recent development, reports have surfaced regarding Anbernic's popular retro gaming handhelds. A user on Reddit discovered that their newly acquired Anbernic RG 34XXSP device, which was advertised with 1 GB of LPDDR4 memory, actually contained only 512 MB of LPDDR3 memory. This finding has sparked a broader investigation, revealing that while older archival versions of Anbernic's website listed the RG 34XXSP with 2 GB of LPDDR4, current listings quietly specify 1 GB. When approached by Tom's Hardware, Anbernic stated that the 512 MB configuration was an "unexpected error" and committed to providing replacements for affected customers. However, the company conspicuously failed to address the alleged downgrade from LPDDR4 to the older LPDDR3 memory standard.

This incident underscores a significant issue within the gaming hardware industry, which has been grappling with a widespread "memory crisis." Prominent figures, such as Wallace Santos, CEO of Maingear, have voiced concerns about the long-term challenges posed by memory supply and pricing. This has led to noticeable price increases across various gaming devices from major manufacturers like Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Valve. For Anbernic's customers, this silent modification in specifications means that recent purchases offer a lesser product value than previous iterations, despite retaining the same price point. The lack of explicit communication regarding these changes, beyond subtle updates to specification sheets, is particularly troubling for consumers who may not diligently scrutinize every detail. It serves as a stark reminder for owners of Anbernic devices to verify the internal components of their consoles to ensure they match advertised specifications, raising questions about consumer trust and corporate accountability in an increasingly complex supply chain environment.
