Arc Raiders Refines Matchmaking: Defense No Longer Counts as Aggression

Embark Studios continues to fine-tune the competitive environment of its popular third-person shooter, Arc Raiders. Recent updates have focused on refining the matchmaking experience, culminating in a significant change where defensive combat is no longer categorized as aggressive behavior. This shift aims to provide players with a more equitable and enjoyable gaming experience.

A New Era for Fair Play in Arc Raiders

Matchmaking Evolution: A Journey Towards Fairness

Over recent months, Embark, the developers behind Arc Raiders, have been diligently working to enhance the game's matchmaking algorithms. Initial observations revealed a discrepancy: solo play often resulted in serene engagements, while team-based matches were markedly more intense. This prompted the development team to reassess how player actions influenced matchmaking.

Distinguishing Defense from Aggression in PvP

A key finding from these adjustments is the clear distinction between defensive maneuvers and initiating combat. Previously, engaging in self-defense against hostile players would contribute to a player's aggression profile, inadvertently categorizing them as aggressors. This unintended consequence often led to a skewed matchmaking experience.

Addressing Past Flaws: The Defensive Playstyle Adjustment

In a prior revision at the end of May, the developers began to differentiate between initiating a fight and responding defensively. While defending oneself was still considered a form of aggression, its impact on a player's profile was reduced. This was a step in the right direction, but the system still required further refinement.

Update 1.39.0: A Game-Changer for Defensive Players

With the release of update 1.39.0, a pivotal change has been introduced: defensive player-versus-player engagements now have no bearing on matchmaking tendencies. Only actions that initiate conflict will contribute to a player's estimated playstyle, ensuring that players who primarily defend themselves are not unfairly penalized.

Understanding the Nuances of the New System

To provide clarity on this updated system, Embark has outlined specific parameters:

  • A squad is considered to be 'defending' if any member is damaged, incapacitated, or eliminated by an enemy.
  • Prolonged engagements, characterized by significant damage and multiple incapacitations, carry more weight for aggressors than brief skirmishes.
  • Intervening in an ongoing conflict between other squads is classified as initiating a fight.

Ongoing Matchmaking Optimizations and Future Prospects

In addition to these recent changes, Embark has confirmed that previous matchmaking improvements, such as separate queues based on squad size (introduced in 1.36.0) and overall system optimizations (from 1.38.0), remain active. These continuous refinements have been well-received by the player community. The development team hopes these efforts will pave the way for a successful launch of the 'Frozen Trail' update in October, following a shift to a less frequent but more substantial update schedule.
