Barilla, the renowned Italian food company, is undertaking a substantial two-phase expansion of its pasta manufacturing facility in Avon, New York. This strategic investment aims to significantly increase the company's production capacity within the United States, allowing it to better serve the growing demand for its products across the American continent. The project is expected to create new employment opportunities and further solidify Barilla's operational footprint in the region, showcasing a strong commitment to local economic development and advanced manufacturing.

Barilla's latest initiative marks a pivotal moment in its strategy to bolster its presence in the American market. This multi-stage development in Avon, New York, is designed to enhance output and streamline distribution, reinforcing the company's ability to cater to an expanding consumer base. The investment reflects Barilla's confidence in the continued growth of the US pasta market and its dedication to providing high-quality products to American consumers.

Boosting Production and Distribution Capabilities

Barilla's expansion plan in Avon, New York, is a significant undertaking designed to enhance its manufacturing prowess. The initial phase of this project involves a substantial financial commitment of $145 million, focusing on constructing a new 52,000-square-foot building. This new infrastructure will house a state-of-the-art production line and three advanced packaging lines, crucial for increasing the volume and efficiency of pasta production. Additionally, a new warehouse will be built to optimize storage and distribution, ensuring that the increased output can be effectively managed and delivered to meet market demand. This strategic investment is a direct response to the escalating demand for Barilla's products in the US, demonstrating the company's proactive approach to market needs.

The first stage of this comprehensive expansion is slated for completion by March 2028, setting the foundation for future growth. Following this, a second phase is planned, which will see the installation of another production line, further amplifying the facility's output capabilities. This incremental approach allows Barilla to scale its operations efficiently while maintaining high standards. Melissa Tendick, the president of Barilla's Americas business, highlighted that this investment is vital for addressing the rising demand in the US. The Avon plant, which commenced operations in 2007, originally involved a $75 million investment and created approximately 145 jobs. With this latest expansion, Barilla anticipates adding over 90 new roles upon the completion of both phases, contributing significantly to local employment and economic prosperity. Governor Kathy Hochul praised the ongoing collaboration, emphasizing its role in showcasing the region's agricultural strengths and commitment to advanced manufacturing, aligning with broader state initiatives for economic revitalization.

Strategic Investment and Market Growth

Barilla's substantial investment in its Avon, New York facility is a strategic move aimed at capitalizing on the robust growth of the US pasta market. This expansion underscores the company's commitment to strengthening its supply chain and ensuring product availability across North America. The decision to enhance production capacity reflects a forward-thinking approach to meet consumer expectations and maintain a competitive edge in a dynamic market landscape. Fabio Pettenari, vice-president of supply chain at Barilla Americas, reiterated the company's dedication to its continued growth in the US and its commitment to the Avon community.

The financial performance of Barilla in 2025 further supports the rationale behind this expansion. The company reported impressive revenue of €4.84 billion ($5.61 billion), with the Americas region contributing a significant 22.4% to the total group sales. This strong performance was underpinned by a 26.5% increase in EBIT to €370.8 million and a remarkable nearly 64% rise in net income to €233.2 million. The US pasta retail sector experienced growth in both value and volume in 2025, driven by strong domestic consumption. Barilla's capital expenditure also increased to €280 million from €250 million, including significant upgrades to its Ames, Iowa plant, which also serves the US market. Globally, Barilla employs approximately 9,000 people and operates 30 facilities across 11 countries, making this US expansion a key part of its global strategy to enhance operational efficiency and market responsiveness.
