Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

Steven E. de Souza, the celebrated screenwriter behind iconic action films such as “Die Hard” and “48 Hrs.,” is venturing into the world of graphic novels with a significant new agreement. Gungnir Books has formalized a deal with de Souza for the creation of three new graphic novels, marking an exciting expansion of his storytelling portfolio. This collaboration builds upon his previous engagement with the “Sheena” franchise, which he revitalized for Dynamite Entertainment through Galaxy Publishing, reintroducing the classic character first conceived in the 1930s to a contemporary audience.

The upcoming titles include “Frostline,” a fresh take on the “Sheena” narrative that transports the jungle queen to a frosty, perilous environment, blending action with elements of horror. Additionally, de Souza will introduce two original works: “Earth Patrol Tonight!,” an action-comedy following a group of astronauts navigating a chaotic intergalactic conflict, and “Gulliver,” a re-imagining of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels” infused with dark fantasy, science fiction, and horror. De Souza's extensive background in adapting various media, from “Judge Dredd” to “Cadillacs and Dinosaurs,” underscores his versatility and profound impact on modern action storytelling, as highlighted by Matthew Medney, founder of Gungnir Books, who praised de Souza's enduring influence and bold creative vision.

This partnership signifies a vibrant period for creative freedom and collaboration, as noted by Galaxy Publishing CEO Gabriella Aratow, who lauded Gungnir’s unique approach to the “Sheena” character and their inclusive planning process. De Souza himself expressed enthusiasm for Gungnir’s environment, likening it to Hollywood’s Golden Age, where storytellers are empowered to innovate across genres. He emphasized the unparalleled creative liberation afforded by graphic novels, allowing imagination to flourish without budgetary constraints—a dream come true for any writer.

Steven E. de Souza's journey into graphic novels illustrates the limitless potential of storytelling and the enduring power of imagination. His new ventures with Gungnir Books are not merely extensions of established franchises or original concepts; they represent a commitment to pushing creative boundaries and fostering an environment where bold ideas can thrive. This collaboration underscores the idea that passion and innovative spirit can lead to extraordinary narratives, inspiring creators and audiences alike to explore new worlds and perspectives. It's a testament to the fact that creativity knows no bounds, encouraging everyone to embrace new challenges and bring their unique visions to life.
