Stablecoin provider Circle Internet Group has completed a significant acquisition, purchasing close to 1,000 blockchain-related patents from technology giant IBM. This strategic move solidifies Circle's position as a major player in the blockchain intellectual property landscape within the United States.

The newly acquired portfolio encompasses a vast array of over 680 patent families, covering critical areas such as blockchain technology itself, as well as its applications in banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, and cloud security. This broad scope indicates Circle's ambition to protect and advance its innovations across diverse sectors. While the financial details of this substantial transaction were not disclosed, the acquisition marks a notable shift in the ownership of valuable blockchain intellectual property.

Previously, IBM was recognized as one of the top U.S. blockchain patent holders, alongside financial institution Bank of America. Circle's integration of these patents is poised to significantly enhance the development and evolution of its core products, including its widely used USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin, the Circle Payments Network, and its proprietary Arc blockchain platform.
