The Deauville American Film Festival, a prestigious event held annually in Normandy, France, recently concluded with significant recognition for emerging and established talent in the cinematic world. This year's festival spotlighted exceptional films, honored industry veterans, and fostered connections between the American and French film sectors, celebrating the artistry and global reach of filmmaking.

"Club Kid" Takes Home Top Honors

Jordan Firstman's inaugural directorial effort, "Club Kid," which first gained widespread acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, continued its winning streak on the French coast. The film was distinguished with the highly coveted Grand Prix Award and also earned the favor of the public, securing the City of Deauville Audience Award. This dual victory underscores the film's compelling narrative and its broad appeal to both critics and moviegoers.

Additional Festival Accolades

Beyond "Club Kid," other notable films received recognition for their outstanding contributions. Water Thompson-Hernandez's "If I Go Will They Miss" and the animated feature "Tangles," another standout from Cannes, were both awarded jury prizes, with "Tangles" further earning the Critics' Prize. Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson's creation, "Mouse," received the festival's Revelation Prize, highlighting its innovative spirit. Additionally, Sam McConnell's "Test" was honored with the Canal+ Prize, rounding out a diverse array of celebrated works.

A Galaxy of Stars Graces Deauville

The ten-day festival was a magnet for prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Celebrated actor Brendan Fraser attended a screening of his latest movie, "Control," and was presented with the Deauville Talent Award. This honor was also bestowed upon Ethan Hawke, who made a return to Deauville three and a half decades after his appearance with "White Fang." Legendary actresses Faye Dunaway and Susan Sarandon received Icon Awards, with Sarandon then heading to the Venice Film Festival. The event also recognized rising stars Sophie Thatcher from "Heretic" and Patrick Schwarzenegger of "The White Lotus."

Distinguished Guests and Industry Engagement

Numerous other luminaries graced the festival with their presence, even without receiving awards. French icon Catherine Deneuve made a special appearance, alongside Casey Affleck, who presented his film "Company," and Ira Sachs, who brought "The Man I Love." The guest list also included Simon Pegg and Sofia Boutella for their film "Only What We Carry," British musician and France resident Pete Doherty, and the high-profile couple Brooklyn Beckham and Nicole Peltz Beckham, further elevating the event's glamour and appeal.

Fostering Franco-American Film Connections

In addition to celebrating films and stars, the Deauville American Film Festival dedicated two days to its industry section, aimed at strengthening the collaboration between the U.S. and French film industries. Filmmakers shared insights and pitched projects, with panels discussing topics such as how French actors can establish careers in the U.S., featuring French casting directors Mathilde Snodgrass and Raphaelle Danglard, and actress Mathilde Ollivier. Representatives from France's CNC cultural agency, Joanna Verner and Cleline Leclercq, provided information on local financing options and tax rebate systems for international productions. A special talk also featured producer David Atrakchi of FullDawa Films, who discussed the making of Netflix's successful rom-com "Champagne Problems," filmed entirely in France.
