A passionate cosplayer and skilled hardware creator has brought a piece of Night City's iconic fashion to life, transforming the distinctive jacket from Cyberpunk 2077 into a wearable marvel. This ambitious endeavor involved integrating cutting-edge flexible OLED screens into the collar, allowing for dynamic, animated displays. The journey was fraught with technical hurdles and required considerable dedication and financial investment, showcasing a remarkable fusion of gaming culture and technological innovation.

Details of the Innovative Cyberpunk 2077 Jacket Creation

In a remarkable display of craftsmanship and technological prowess, a cosplayer known as Zibartas has meticulously recreated the signature NUSA infiltrator jacket from the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion. The most striking feature of this replica is its flexible OLED collar, which mirrors the animated display seen in the game. This sophisticated component, while offering an authentic representation, proved to be the most challenging aspect of the project, with each flexible OLED panel costing approximately $300.

To power the collar's dynamic visuals, Zibartas initially faced difficulties synchronizing video across multiple screens using a modern Raspberry Pi due to its single hardware decoder. A resourceful solution was found by switching to an older, more versatile Raspberry Pi 4, which enabled the development of a custom workaround for smooth, synchronized video playback on two screens. This critical software development alone consumed a full week of effort.

The physical construction of the collar also presented unexpected obstacles. Despite the screens being advertised as 'flexible', their internal conductors were extremely fragile and prone to damage from twisting. An initial design, intended to simply slide the OLEDs into place, resulted in a costly setback. After several weeks of iterative design and rigorous testing, Zibartas devised a "semi-rigid understructure" for the collar. This innovative design offers flexibility while providing crucial resistance against twisting, ensuring the delicate conductors remain intact. The OLEDs are now carefully positioned along a track, secured by hard end caps that protect their sensitive wiring. Impressively, the Linux and HDMI-compatible OLED screens allow the wearer to even play Cyberpunk 2077 directly on the jacket's collar.

The intricate design of the jacket's patches was not overlooked. Zibartas leveraged advanced software, designing the patterns from scratch in Clo 3D based on in-game assets and screenshots. The angular patches were then crafted in Autodesk Fusion, transferred onto black fabric using heat, and meticulously sewn onto the jacket, combining digital precision with traditional tailoring skills.

The Future of Wearable Cosplay Technology

This project stands as a vivid testament to the boundless creativity and technical ambition within the cosplay community. The integration of flexible OLED technology into a wearable garment pushes the boundaries of traditional costume design, offering a glimpse into a future where interactive elements are seamlessly woven into our clothing. It's inspiring to witness such dedication, turning complex digital aesthetics into tangible, functional art. This innovative jacket not only celebrates the unique style of Cyberpunk 2077 but also ignites curiosity about what imaginative and technologically advanced creations Zibartas, and other creators like them, will unveil next, promising an exciting evolution in wearable technology and fan culture.
