Filmax Introduces Mar Olid's 'The Wedding Hustlers' Globally

Ta-Nehisi Coates

Author and journalist whose work on culture, race, and history includes writing for Marvel's "Black Panther."

Filmax, the Spanish mini-major, is set to introduce Mar Olid's romantic comedy, 'The Wedding Hustlers' (original title: 'Si te he visto no me acuerdo'), to the international market. A preview of the film will be presented to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), in anticipation of its Spanish theatrical release scheduled for 2027.

This cinematic endeavor is a collaborative production involving Filmax, Bixagu Entertainment, and Pompón AIE. Further support comes from prominent broadcasters Movistar Plus and RTVE, as well as the Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA). Filmax will also manage the domestic distribution of the film in Spain. The narrative centers on Bea, portrayed by Silvia Alonso, who awakens with amnesia only to find herself engaged to a wealthy man, played by Álex González. Her new reality is challenged by Edu, played by Maxi Iglesias, who reveals her true identity as a skilled con artist targeting affluent individuals. The script is penned by Èric Navarro, Pol Cortecans, and Natalia Durán. Mar Olid, known for her previous directorial works 'From Good to the Hood' and 'A Family Knight-Mare,' brings her extensive experience from Spanish television to this project.

Ivan Diaz, head of international at Filmax, lauded the film as "fresh, funny, and original," highlighting its significant potential for remake sales. This strategy follows the notable success of 'The Invite' in the U.S., a remake of Cesc Gay’s 'The People Upstairs,' which was also produced by Filmax.

This film exemplifies the vibrant and innovative spirit of Spanish cinema, showcasing compelling storytelling and a keen understanding of global audience appeal. Such productions not only entertain but also demonstrate the universal language of humor and the intricate dance of human relationships, promising a delightful viewing experience for audiences worldwide and reflecting the power of creative collaborations.
