Finecut, a leading Korean sales agency, has significantly enhanced its presence at the European Film Market by securing two compelling new titles: the 3D animated film 'Long Long Night' and Hong Sangsoo's latest cinematic endeavor, 'The Day She Returns.' Hong's film has been officially selected for the Panorama section of the 76th Berlin Film Festival, continuing his consistent participation in the festival for the seventh consecutive year. This strategic move underscores Finecut's dedication to showcasing a diverse range of Korean filmmaking talent on the international stage.
The animated feature 'Long Long Night' is an adaptation of a highly successful Korean novel, which has sold over 700,000 copies domestically and garnered the Grand Prize at the 2020 Munhakdongne Children's Literature Award. Its international appeal is evident through editions released in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Türkiye, with a Chinese version slated for future release, and a stage musical adaptation. This narrative explores the poignant journey of the last rhinoceros of its kind, who forms an unexpected bond with a penguin hatched from an abandoned egg, as they embark on a shared quest to the ocean. The story draws inspiration from the real-life Sudan, the last northern white rhino, and director Youm Kyu-bock is leveraging Unreal Engine to create visually stunning and realistic imagery. The film, currently in production, is a collaborative effort between Googgoog and Studio Eon, presented by The Contents On.
'The Day She Returns' marks Hong Sangsoo's 34th feature film, following his 2025 release 'What Does That Nature Say to You.' The film portrays an actress's challenging experience with promotional interviews for her comeback film, a process that proves more arduous than anticipated. This project reunites Hong with actress Song Sunmi, who previously collaborated with him on 'In Our Day' (2023), the closing film of Cannes Directors' Fortnight. After its world premiere at the Berlinale, the movie is scheduled for a theatrical release in the first half of 2026, produced by Jeonwonsa Film Co. Finecut's EFM roster further includes 'Tristes Tropiques,' an action-noir by Park Hoon-jung, which has already seen its initial cut premiere at the Sitges festival, and 'Journey There,' a drama starring Justin H. Min, which earned two awards at the Busan International Film Festival, depicting an elderly woman's journey through end-of-life decisions. The slate is completed by 'Wrangler,' a psychological thriller exploring a dog trainer's unraveling life, and 'Time of Cinema,' an anthology showcasing works from Korean directors Lee Jong-pil, Yoon Ga-eun, and Jang Kun-jae.
The global film industry thrives on diverse narratives and innovative storytelling, and Finecut's expanded EFM slate is a testament to the vibrant and evolving landscape of Korean cinema. These films, ranging from poignant animations to introspective dramas, offer unique perspectives and artistic depth, promising to resonate with audiences worldwide. Such cultural exchanges through film not only entertain but also foster greater understanding and appreciation for different societies and their artistic expressions, enriching our collective human experience.
