Finnish Stars to Lead Satirical Film 'Arrogance'

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

A new cinematic venture, 'Arrogance,' is poised to bring together two prominent Finnish actors, Jussi Vatanen and Seidi Haarla, known for their roles in critically acclaimed films. Vatanen, celebrated for his performance in 'Fallen Leaves,' and Haarla, recognized for her work in 'Compartment No. 6,' will headline this satirical production that delves into themes of societal expectations and individual freedom.

The narrative centers on Ossi, portrayed by Vatanen, a man who consciously opts for unemployment as a statement of his beliefs. His life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Kaisa, played by Haarla, who accepts his unconventional lifestyle. Their bond is challenged when Kaisa's career opportunity in Paris forces Ossi to confront the realities of his situation, leading him to devise a peculiar plan to write a book about his experiences in an effort to keep her by his side. This film adaptation draws inspiration from Ossi Nyman's 2017 novel 'Röyhkeys' ('Arrogance'), a work that previously ignited considerable debate within Finland for its sharp commentary on work culture and social welfare systems, garnering both praise for its critical perspective and criticism for its provocative stance on welfare dependency.

With production support from the Finnish Film Foundation, 'Arrogance' is directed and written by Ville Jankeri and produced by Sons of Lumière, a company recently noted for 'Earth Song' premiering at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Distribution rights have been secured by Nordisk Film for the Nordic regions, with Folkets Bio handling theatrical releases in Sweden, signaling a broad reach for this thought-provoking satire.

This upcoming film not only promises to entertain but also encourages viewers to reflect on societal norms, personal choices, and the multifaceted interpretations of ambition and happiness. It challenges conventional understandings of success and contentment, inviting a deeper consideration of the paths individuals choose in life.
