FX Greenlights "Very Young Frankenstein" Series Adaptation

Stephen King

Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

FX has given a formal series order to “Very Young Frankenstein,” a show drawing inspiration from the celebrated Mel Brooks-Gene Wilder comedic masterpiece, “Young Frankenstein.” This adaptation was initially announced with a pilot order in 2025 and is now set to bring a fresh, irreverent take on the iconic tale to the small screen. The project boasts a talented cast and an impressive creative team, aiming to deliver a unique blend of classic homage and contemporary humor.

The series will feature Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House in leading roles, building on their performances in the previously filmed pilot. Audiences can also look forward to appearances from Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani, and Cary Elwes, who contributed to the pilot episode. While specific plot details remain largely undisclosed, the producers have confirmed that the series will reinterpret the beloved narrative of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein and his audacious scientific endeavors.

Behind the scenes, the creative force driving “Very Young Frankenstein” includes writer Stefani Robinson, who also serves as an executive producer. She is joined by fellow executive producers Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch, all of whom are recognized for their work on the critically acclaimed FX comedy “What We Do in the Shadows.” Waititi further contributed to the project by directing the pilot, setting the tone for the upcoming series. Legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the original 1974 film, is also on board as an executive producer, alongside his producing partner Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskoff, who produced the original movie. This ensures a direct link to the source material’s comedic genius and narrative integrity. Production of the series is managed by 20th Television.

Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm for the new series, highlighting its potential to combine the nostalgic appeal of “Young Frankenstein” with FX’s signature brand of inventive and unconventional comedy. He stated that the involvement of experienced FX veterans like Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch, coupled with the enduring legacy of Mel Brooks, guarantees an entertaining experience for viewers, mirroring the enjoyment derived by the production team. The original 1974 film, celebrated for its wit and performances, starred Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who ventures into his ancestor's work of reanimating the deceased upon inheriting his Transylvanian estate.

The original ensemble cast of “Young Frankenstein” included renowned talents such as Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle, and Kenneth Mars. Gene Hackman also made a memorable cameo appearance as a blind man who crosses paths with Frankenstein’s creation. The film’s critical and audience acclaim firmly established its status as a comedic classic, influencing generations of filmmakers and comedians. This new series aims to honor that legacy while introducing a fresh perspective for contemporary audiences.

This new series represents an exciting venture for FX, promising to captivate both loyal fans of the original film and new viewers with its unique blend of classic inspiration and modern comedic sensibilities. The involvement of such a distinguished cast and crew suggests a high-quality production that will bring a fresh, yet respectful, reimagining of a timeless comedic narrative to television screens.
