Game Developer "Build a Rocket Boy" Faces Imminent Closure Amid Layoffs

Build a Rocket Boy (BARB), the game development studio responsible for the action-thriller MindsEye, is reportedly facing its final days. Multiple sources indicate that the company has initiated another round of significant layoffs, potentially affecting all remaining staff. This development follows a tumultuous period for the studio, marked by the divisive reception of its flagship game and internal controversies.

Since the launch of MindsEye in 2025, BARB has grappled with considerable difficulties. The game, despite its perceived flaws, garnered a peculiar form of notoriety, leading to widespread discussion within the gaming community. Amidst this, the studio controversially attributed the game's shortcomings to an alleged 'sabotage campaign', a narrative that reportedly strained its relationship with original publisher IO Interactive, leading to the termination of their publishing agreement. Subsequent updates to MindsEye, including an expansion intended to reveal evidence of the purported sabotage, failed to resonate with audiences, further exacerbating the studio's woes.

The internal environment at BARB also became a point of concern, with multiple reports detailing accusations of severe mismanagement, excessive crunch periods, and unauthorized surveillance of employees. These allegations painted a picture of a company struggling to maintain stability and trust among its workforce. The current wave of layoffs, communicated by various employees through social media platforms, suggests that the cumulative effect of these challenges has pushed BARB to the brink.

Notable figures within the studio, such as lead weapon and prop artist Adam Ridsdale, principal talent acquisition partner Dan Hawkins, and senior VFX artist Jason Waller, have publicly confirmed their redundancy. Their messages, often expressing heavy hearts and the need to seek new opportunities, collectively hint at a complete cessation of operations. Dan Hawkins, for instance, noted that he would remain to "help wrap things up," implying a definitive end for the company.

While Build a Rocket Boy has yet to issue an official statement regarding these developments, the consistent reports from its employees strongly suggest an imminent shutdown. The unfolding situation highlights the precarious nature of the video game industry, where even established studios can face abrupt closures when confronted with critical failures and internal strife.

The potential closure of Build a Rocket Boy serves as a stark reminder of the volatile landscape within the video game industry. Despite previous attempts to salvage its reputation and projects, the studio's journey has been plagued by internal and external conflicts, ultimately leading to a difficult conclusion for its dedicated team.
