Josh Kushner's Wealth Soars: The Impact of SpaceX and AI Investments

Mr. Money Mustache

Pseudonym for Pete Adeney, a blogger who popularized extreme early retirement through frugality and investing.

Josh Kushner, poised to become the next proprietor of the Los Angeles Lakers, has witnessed an exponential increase in his financial standing, with his venture firm's assets almost tripling in the past year, propelling his net worth to an astounding $16.7 billion. This remarkable surge from $5.2 billion just twelve months prior, as estimated by Forbes, underscores the strategic prowess behind his investment decisions.

The core of this financial escalation lies with Thrive Capital, the venture firm he established and continues to lead. The firm's managed assets have ballooned to over $65 billion, a significant leap from the $23 billion recorded in December 2024. A substantial portion of this growth can be attributed to two pivotal triumphs this year. Kushner's early investment in SpaceX, when its valuation stood at $38 billion, transformed into an impressive $10 billion holding following the rocket manufacturer's public listing in June. Shortly thereafter, SpaceX's $60 billion acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor effectively doubled the value of Kushner's 7% stake in the company to $4.2 billion. While his position in OpenAI, an AI research laboratory, is currently less direct, with a valuation of $852 billion in March and an anticipated public offering, it represents another promising venture for his portfolio. These calculated moves, particularly the concrete gains from SpaceX, have been instrumental in solidifying his impressive financial trajectory, further diversified by stakes in companies such as Databricks, Stripe, and Anduril, alongside earlier successes like Instagram and Spotify.

Concurrently, Kushner's ambition to acquire the Los Angeles Lakers, alongside former Disney CEO Bob Iger, for a record-setting $12.5 billion, remains subject to approval from the NBA's Board of Governors. This transaction, occurring mere months after the previous owner, Mark Walter, acquired the team for $10 billion, still navigates the complexities of closure. Despite the significant sports news, Kushner's immediate public reaction was notably understated, with his focus appearing to be on Thrive Holdings' $2 billion capital raise, rather than the basketball team. However, with Jeanie Buss's siblings agreeing to divest their remaining shares, Kushner and Iger's combined ownership would expand to approximately 83%. His investment philosophy, yielding an average of 33% annual returns after fees, demonstrably outperforms the S&P 500 over the same timeframe, solidifying his reputation as a shrewd investor and placing his wealth at nearly seventeen times that of his brother, Jared, according to Forbes.

Josh Kushner's journey exemplifies the power of foresight and strategic investment in emerging technologies and high-growth sectors. His success in identifying and capitalizing on opportunities within the AI and space exploration industries not only showcases remarkable business acumen but also inspires a vision of innovation and expansion. This narrative underscores the potential for transformative wealth creation when capital is deployed with intelligence and conviction, shaping the future of diverse industries and paving the way for continued advancements.
