The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival marked its 80th year with a lavish celebration held during the Cannes Film Festival. This significant milestone was commemorated with a special luncheon on the beach, drawing attention to Karlovy Vary's long-standing legacy in the global cinema landscape. The event underscored the festival's deep roots and its continued relevance in fostering cinematic talent and appreciation, reaffirming its status as a pivotal cultural institution.

The celebratory luncheon took place at Plage Des Palmes in conjunction with the Cannes Film Festival, featuring a grand birthday cake to honor the occasion. Prominent attendees included Krystof Mucha, chair of the Karlovy Vary festival, Karel Och, its artistic director, and Jakub Havrlant of Rockaway Arts, the festival's majority owner. Dea Lawrence, publisher and co-president of Variety, also played a key role in hosting the event. Lawrence lauded Karlovy Vary as the world's second-oldest film festival, emphasizing its unique blend of Hollywood glamour and the vibrant energy of young cinephiles from across Europe. She further praised the Czech spa town as an exceptionally scenic location for a film festival. Guests savored a buffet lunch that included roast beef, salmon, risotto, and truffled deviled eggs, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Among the distinguished guests were LuckyChap partner Milan Popelka, filmmakers Anna Maguire and Kyle Greenberg, producer Rémi Burah, Andreas Buhlmann of Swiss Films, and model Ellyana Perosi. Krystof Mucha, who assumed the role of chair last year after being involved with the festival since 1997, expressed gratitude to Variety for its more than three decades of partnership. He also thanked the attendees for their unwavering friendship and support, highlighting the privilege of contributing to the festival's remarkable journey. Following the lunch and speeches, a multi-tiered birthday cake was presented, with Mucha performing the ceremonial cutting.

Established in 1946 in Bohemia, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival gained international recognition in the 1960s as a platform for Czech New Wave filmmakers and attracted renowned international cinema auteurs suchs as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Tony Richardson, Glauber Rocha, and Martin Ritt. Esteemed directors like Ken Loach, Richard Brooks, and Stanley Kramer have also competed there. The festival experienced a revival in 1994 under the leadership of Czech theater and film star Jiří Bartoška, subsequently drawing major international stars and a new generation of enthusiastic audiences.

Over the years, the festival has welcomed an impressive roster of celebrities, including Robert Redford, Mel Gibson, Sharon Stone, Gregory Peck, Robert DeNiro, Johnny Depp, Susan Sarandon, Michael Douglas, Renee Zellweger, Michael Caine, Uma Thurman, Robert Pattinson, and Julianne Moore. Steven Gaydos, former executive editor of content for Variety and a frequent visitor to Karlovy Vary, observed in a special tribute that the festival, born under oppression in the 1940s and revitalized after Soviet influence, maintained its original mission. He characterized it as a festival that is sensitive, intimate, quality-focused, youthful, and vibrant, qualities that have defined it for more than three decades.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival's 80th anniversary celebration at Cannes not only commemorated its rich past but also showcased its vibrant present and promising future. The event emphasized the festival's enduring commitment to cinematic excellence and its significant role in the global film community, solidifying its place as a cherished institution that continues to evolve and inspire.
