After an impressive 18-season run as Dr. Owen Hunt on the acclaimed medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," actor Kevin McKidd has stepped away from the series. While he initially envisioned a dramatic, heroic demise for his character, the show's creative team opted for a more optimistic conclusion, sending Owen and Dr. Teddy Altman off to a new life in Paris. McKidd shares his insights on this significant transition, his continued involvement with the show as a director, and his plans for upcoming acting roles.

Kevin McKidd's Farewell to Grey Sloan Memorial and Future Endeavors

In a recent interview conducted on May 13, 2026, Kevin McKidd, who portrayed the complex Dr. Owen Hunt for nearly two decades on ABC's long-running series "Grey's Anatomy," discussed the circumstances surrounding his character's exit. McKidd revealed that he had contemplated Owen's departure for several years, often imagining a heroic self-sacrifice. However, showrunner Meg Marinis presented an alternative: a peaceful relocation to Paris with Dr. Teddy Altman, portrayed by Kim Raver.

This decision, influenced by financial considerations and a desire to spare fans further emotional turmoil after previous character deaths, was initially a difficult adjustment for McKidd. He ultimately embraced the new direction, recognizing it as a positive evolution for Owen's character, who, after years of personal struggles, finally prioritizes Teddy's lead. The season 22 finale, titled "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and airing on May 7, saw Owen narrowly escape a bridge collapse, solidifying his choice to accompany Teddy to her new professional opportunity abroad.

Despite his acting departure, McKidd will maintain a connection to "Grey's Anatomy," confirming his return to direct an episode in season 23. This role is familiar to him, having directed 49 episodes of the show, including his own final acting episode. He shared a poignant moment from the wrap of the finale, recalling how the emotional weight of his 20-year journey with the cast and crew only truly hit him during his flight back to Scotland, his homeland, signifying a full circle moment in his career. Looking ahead, McKidd expressed his enthusiasm for a darker, psychological thriller based on the novel "The Only Suspect," a project that will see him shooting in London after concluding his work on "Highlander" in New York.

McKidd's reflections offer a compelling glimpse into the evolving landscape of television production and the personal journey of an actor deeply invested in a long-standing role. His story underscores the dynamic nature of creative decisions in Hollywood, balancing artistic vision with practical constraints and audience expectations. It also highlights the enduring appeal of "Grey's Anatomy" as a "comfort food" for viewers, suggesting its continued relevance in a rapidly changing media environment. McKidd's transition from lead actor to director and his pursuit of new acting challenges demonstrate a robust and adaptable career, leaving fans to ponder the future of Owen and Teddy while anticipating his next creative endeavors.
