The Locarno Film Festival, renowned for its commitment to global cinematic diversity, has launched an innovative program, "Open Doors Connect," aimed at empowering filmmakers from underrepresented regions and fostering international co-productions. This initiative marks a significant step towards global cinematic equality, extending its reach beyond its traditional focus areas.

Bridging Continents: A New Era for Global Cinema

Introducing the "Open Doors Connect" Initiative

The Locarno Film Festival has officially unveiled its new "Open Doors Connect" program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to support film professionals from diverse backgrounds. This platform is an extension of the established Open Doors co-production and talent development program, which champions filmmakers from communities and regions where artistic expression often faces significant challenges. The Connect program specifically broadens its scope to include professionals from countries outside Open Doors' historical geographic focus, promoting a more inclusive global film landscape.

A Focus on African Cinema and New Partnerships

For its second iteration, Open Doors is placing a special emphasis on African cinema, recognizing its immense potential and the unique stories it offers. The "Connect" initiative is structured to invite foundations, film institutions, and various organizations to participate by sponsoring industry professionals. This novel approach aims to unlock new funding models, access untapped markets, and cultivate collaborations that are fundamentally rooted in principles of global equality and mutual support.

Nurturing Talent Through Mentorship and Hybrid Programs

Participants in the Open Doors Connect program will engage in an intensive two-month hybrid program, combining online learning with an on-site experience at the Locarno Film Festival. The program boasts an esteemed mentorship team, including Kenyan producer Fibby Kioria and South African curator, producer, and arts manager Mitchell Harper. This structured environment will provide invaluable guidance, complemented by integration with the broader Open Doors and Locarno Pro programs, and personalized industry matchmaking opportunities to foster professional growth and networking.

Facilitating South-South Collaborations

Mitchell Harper emphasized that the inaugural Open Doors Connect signals a new chapter in the program's evolution. By bringing together film professionals from countries such as Benin, Madagascar, Brazil, and Mongolia, the initiative seeks not only to advance the professional development of its participants but also to generate and facilitate South-South collaborations. This approach encourages the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and successful models unique to each participating region, enriching the global film ecosystem.

Showcasing the Inaugural Participants and Their Sponsors

Locarno has proudly announced the four pioneering participants and their dedicated sponsors for this year's Open Doors Connect program. Candy Radifera from Madagascar, recognized for her upcoming documentary The Crab Diagonal, is sponsored by the Wyss Academy for Nature. Frédy Agblo from Benin, an emerging producer dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices, is supported by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. Talita Arruda from Brazil, an experienced distributor, has found a partner in Projeto Paradiso. Lastly, Nomintuya Baasankhuu from Mongolia, who previously participated in Open Doors and subsequently founded Film Nomad, is sponsored by Film Nomad Lab, a testament to the program's enduring impact and inspiration.
