Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

The 2026 Locarno Film Festival is set to recognize the illustrious career of Sigurjón “Joni” Sighvatsson, an Icelandic-born, U.S.-based producer whose work has significantly shaped film and television over several decades. He will be honored with the Raimondo Rezzonico Award during a ceremony on the evening of August 6th in the picturesque Piazza Grande. To mark this special occasion, the festival will feature screenings of two prominent films from his extensive portfolio: David Lynch’s critically acclaimed 1990 feature, Wild at Heart, and Philippe Parreno and Douglas Gordon’s unique 2006 documentary, Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait.

Sighvatsson’s impact on the entertainment industry is profound. As a co-founder of Propaganda Films in 1986, he played a pivotal role in the production of a vast number of music videos in the United States, launching the careers of many renowned directors such as Zack Snyder, Spike Jonze, Gore Verbinski, Michael Bay, and co-founder David Fincher. Beyond music videos, his production credits include Julian Schnabel’s influential 1996 film, Basquiat, and more than 60 feature films and television series, notably the iconic Twin Peaks (1990-91) and Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000). The festival lauded Sighvatsson for his unwavering commitment to nurturing new talent and his significant influence on contemporary pop aesthetics.

The Locarno Film Festival further highlighted Sighvatsson’s collaborative spirit, noting his partnerships with visionary filmmakers like Nicolas Winding Refn and Jim Sheridan, as well as artists such as Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. These collaborations have resulted in cult classics that continue to inspire and influence a new generation of cinematic artists worldwide. His dedication to fostering originality and independence has cemented his legacy as a beacon of audacious integrity, creativity, and vision within the global film community.

Giona A. Nazzaro, the artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, emphasized Sighvatsson’s distinctive approach, describing it as a "politique du producteur"—a producer's policy—characterized by a deeply European sensibility while navigating the complexities of the American industry. This unique perspective allowed him to empower artists like David Lynch to exercise complete creative freedom and supported filmmakers such as Kathryn Bigelow in crafting some of her most personal and impactful works. Nazzaro affirmed that Sighvatsson’s instincts as a producer profoundly shaped 1990s cinema, making him an invaluable point of reference for filmmakers striving for originality and independence.

The Raimondo Rezzonico Award, initiated in 2002 by the Municipality of Minusio, Switzerland, pays tribute to the former president of the Locarno festival, who served from 1981 to 1999. The 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival is scheduled to run from August 5th to August 15th, promising another exciting celebration of cinematic art and talent.

The upcoming Locarno Film Festival will pay homage to a key figure in modern cinema, Sigurjón “Joni” Sighvatsson, through its prestigious Raimondo Rezzonico Award. This honor celebrates his remarkable journey from co-founding Propaganda Films to producing diverse, impactful projects across film and television. Sighvatsson's career is distinguished by his support for groundbreaking artists and his role in creating some of the most memorable works of his era, leaving a lasting mark on the industry.
