MercurySteam Confirmed to Be Developing Metroid Ravenous

Nintendo has a history of being discreet about its game development partnerships. However, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Metroid Dread, MercurySteam, has strongly hinted at their involvement in the upcoming direct sequel, Metroid Ravenous, through unofficial channels, effectively confirming their role despite Nintendo's silence.

MercurySteam subtly announced their participation by sharing the Metroid Ravenous announcement trailer on LinkedIn with a smiling emoji, and on X (formerly Twitter) with ninja and heart emojis, leaving little doubt about their engagement. Metroid Ravenous, officially unveiled during Nintendo's recent Direct event after an accidental leak by Brazil's game rating board, promises a new adventure for intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran. This time, Samus finds herself on a hostile alien world where she turns the tables on her adversaries, utilizing her energy-absorbing abilities to consume monsters—a stark contrast to the disempowerment theme of its predecessor, Metroid Dread. The game is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.

Founded in Madrid in 2002, MercurySteam has an impressive portfolio, including Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of an earlier Metroid title, and the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series. While their recent game, Blades of Fire, faced mixed reviews and fell short of sales targets, their work on Metroid Dread was highly praised. However, the studio has also faced controversy, including accusations of omitting developers from Metroid Dread's credits and allegations of abusive labor practices, such as mandatory overtime, restricted communication, and retaliation against employees for taking leave, as reported by CSVI-CGT and 3DJuegos.

Despite past controversies, the strong indication of MercurySteam's continued involvement with the Metroid series for Ravenous signals a potential for innovation and a fresh direction for the beloved franchise. The Metroid Ravenous announcement highlights the continuous evolution of gaming narratives and mechanics, promising players a captivating experience where the hero actively reclaims power, embodying resilience and strategic prowess in the face of daunting challenges, and inspiring us to overcome adversity with renewed strength and determination.
