Mia McKenna-Bruce Joins Star-Studded Cast of 'The Species'

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Emerging talent Mia McKenna-Bruce, a recipient of the BAFTA Rising Star award, has officially joined the ensemble cast of Justin Chadwick's highly anticipated drama, "The Species." This announcement positions her alongside cinematic legends Anthony Hopkins and Charlotte Rampling, as well as the distinguished Tom Hollander, for a compelling on-screen collaboration.

The narrative of "The Species" delves into the post-mortem complexities surrounding Charles Darwin's autobiography. Charlotte Rampling portrays Emma Darwin, grappling with her late husband's legacy and the potential theological implications of his almost atheistic writings. The film explores her internal conflict as she navigates pressures from her son George and publisher Marshall Winwick (Hollander), all while fearing for Darwin's spiritual fate. McKenna-Bruce takes on the role of Jane, the domestic help within the Darwin household, offering a unique perspective to the unfolding drama.

Justin Chadwick, celebrated for his work on projects like "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom," directs the feature from a script penned by Jacob Killion. The production boasts a talented crew, including Oscar-nominated cinematographer Evgenia Arbugaeva and acclaimed composer Lorne Balfe. "The Species" is produced by Christian Taylor and Mary Aloe, with support from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, and is set to captivate audiences with its historical depth and emotional resonance. HanWay Films is currently handling international sales for this prestigious project at Cannes, with several key distributors already secured across Europe and Asia.

This film underscores the enduring power of storytelling to explore profound human dilemmas and the courageous pursuit of truth. It reminds us that even in the face of societal and personal challenges, the quest for understanding and reconciliation remains a powerful, unifying force, driving narratives that enlighten and inspire.
