Peruvian Culinary Drama 'Mistura' Expands Global Reach with North American and UK Deals
In a significant move for Peruvian cinema, the critically acclaimed culinary drama 'Mistura' has officially been picked up by Outsider Pictures for North American distribution and Unannounced Film Company for the UK. The film, which saw an impressive 10-week theatrical engagement in Peru and a solid run in Colombia, is set to captivate audiences across new territories. Outsider Pictures plans a limited theatrical release in North America starting April 24, with Unannounced Film Company following suit in the UK during the spring.
Directed by Ricardo de Montreuil, known for 'My Brother’s Wife' and 'Máncora', 'Mistura' (meaning 'mixture' or 'blend') transports viewers to 1960s Lima. The narrative centers on Norma, portrayed by Barbara Mori, a woman forced to rebuild her life after her husband, played by Christian Meier, abandons her. Ostracized by Lima's elite, Norma finds solace and a new purpose by collaborating with various community members to establish a restaurant in her grand home. This venture not only transforms her life but also becomes a vibrant exploration of Peru's rich cultural heritage and its renowned culinary traditions. The film also marks a reunion for De Montreuil with his lead actors, Mori and Meier, whom he previously directed in his 2005 romantic drama.
'Mistura' garnered widespread acclaim in Peru, achieving over 130,000 admissions and becoming the third-highest-grossing local production and the top-earning Peruvian drama of its year. Its success was underscored by standing ovations and an enthusiastic public reception, an unusual feat for an independent domestic drama. The film has also made a significant impact on the international festival circuit, making its debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival in California and subsequently being an official selection at more than two dozen festivals, including Hamptons, Lima, and Morelia (FICM).
Ivan Orlic of Seine Pictures, the film's producer, expressed immense pride in the artistic collaboration that brought 'Mistura' to life. He highlighted the film's resonance with audiences both domestically and abroad and praised the commitment of the new distribution partners. Orlic views 'Mistura' not merely as a culinary period piece but as a heartfelt tribute to the Peruvian people, their enduring traditions, and the powerful spirit of reinvention and entrepreneurship. The executive production team includes Barbara Mori, Christian Meier, Juan Pablo Olyslager, Raul Romero, and Ricardo de Montreuil, with Ganiden Media managing the film’s international rights. The distribution deals were negotiated by Orlic, Paul Hudson of Outsider Pictures, and Laurence Gornall of Unannounced Company.
The expansion of 'Mistura' into North American and UK markets is a testament to the universal appeal of stories rooted in authentic cultural experiences and human resilience. It underscores the growing international appreciation for diverse cinematic voices and the power of food as a narrative tool to explore identity, community, and transformation. This film serves as a compelling example of how local narratives can transcend geographical boundaries and resonate deeply with global audiences, fostering a greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
