Fashion luminary Phillip Lim recently hosted an exclusive gathering at Có Lạc, chef Helen Nguyen's renowned Vietnamese eatery in Manhattan's East Village, to commemorate two significant personal and professional milestones. The intimate evening marked both the unveiling of his innovative new label, PlayLoveWin, and his 53rd birthday—a particularly special occasion as it was the first time he had ever organized a birthday celebration for himself.

The distinguished guest list featured prominent figures from the fashion and arts world, including celebrated ballerina Misty Copeland, fellow designers Prabal Gurung, Peter Do, and Laura Kim, alongside the newly appointed campaign face, Ronny Chieng. Lim expressed his joy and personal growth, stating, "After 53 years, this is my inaugural birthday party, and I now feel a profound sense of deserving to celebrate myself." The atmosphere was further enhanced by disposable cameras provided at each table, encouraging guests to capture candid moments and share their thoughts on life's joys, passions, and triumphs through interactive question cards.

Phillip Lim's Resurgence and the Philosophy of PlayLoveWin

The event celebrated fashion designer Phillip Lim's launch of his new label, PlayLoveWin, and his 53rd birthday, his first self-hosted celebration. Held at Có Lạc, a Vietnamese restaurant in Manhattan, the gathering included notable guests like Misty Copeland, Prabal Gurung, Peter Do, Laura Kim, and Ronny Chieng. Lim shared his personal journey, emphasizing his return to creative passion after departing his previous namesake company. He highlighted the significance of celebrating personal milestones and fostering genuine connections, encouraging guests to reflect on themes of play, love, and winning through interactive cards. The evening seamlessly blended personal reflection with professional re-emergence, marking a new chapter for the designer.

Phillip Lim's path to founding PlayLoveWin involved a period of introspection and a conscious decision to step away from his long-standing namesake company in October 2024. He revealed his desire to rekindle his creative spirit, to rediscover the joy in his craft, and to fall in love with the design process anew. What was initially intended as a break transformed into a pivotal moment during a trip to Asia later that year, where an unexpected meeting in Shanghai sparked the foundational idea for PlayLoveWin. The core concept, Lim explained, intuitively centered on shirts. For him, a fresh shirt symbolizes a new beginning, a reset button, and an opportunity to "play, love, and win again." This philosophy resonated deeply with his peers; Laura Kim, co-founder of Monse, lauded the brand's name, noting how it serves as a reminder to embrace enjoyment, passion, and ambition. Veteran editor Kate Berry also praised Lim's renewed focus on the intricate craftsmanship of tailoring and shirt-making, recognizing his enduring influence as a pioneering Asian designer.

A Star-Studded Celebration of Fashion and Friendship

The evening at Có Lạc not only showcased Phillip Lim's new PlayLoveWin label but also served as a heartfelt celebration of his 53rd birthday, an event he organized for himself for the very first time. The guest list was a testament to his influence and connections within the industry, featuring prominent figures such as ballerina Misty Copeland, and fellow designers Prabal Gurung, Peter Do, and Laura Kim, alongside campaign star Ronny Chieng. Lim’s reflection on the importance of self-celebration resonated with attendees, who enjoyed handcrafted Tepozán tequila cocktails and sophisticated Vietnamese cuisine served family-style. The convivial atmosphere, marked by laughter, heartfelt conversations, and toasts from close friends like Prabal Gurung, underscored the strong bonds of community and admiration surrounding Lim.

The celebration unfolded in two distinct phases, beginning with a lively cocktail hour upstairs in the restaurant, where guests mingled while enjoying unique Tepozán tequila cocktails such as Soda Xí Muội, Lychee Saketinis, and Palomas. The festivities then moved to the more intimate downstairs area for dinner, where tables were thoughtfully arranged in varied configurations, from cozy two-person settings to larger communal tables. This arrangement encouraged intimate conversations, a theme further supported by disposable cameras and blank cards with prompts like, "When do you play? How do you love? What is your win?" Lim's intention was to foster vulnerability and deeper connections among his guests. The culinary experience featured elegant Vietnamese dishes, including steamed coconut rice cakes and fried rice presented in mini kabocha pumpkins, served in a family-style format that encouraged sharing and camaraderie. A highlight of the evening was a surprise custom cake, shaped like one of Lim’s new shirts, presented as everyone sang "Happy Birthday," a moment that deeply touched Lim, who expressed profound gratitude for being surrounded by his "found family" and those who have supported him from the very beginning.
