Redefining Ladylike: The Evolution of Modern Elegance

Gloria Vanderbilt

Fashion designer, artist, and author, known for jeans and writing about style and her extraordinary life.

In recent seasons, the classic 'lady who lunches' aesthetic, popularized by figures like Truman Capote's 'swans,' influenced numerous fashion collections with its tweed suits, pearls, and distinctive hats. However, these interpretations often felt like mere costumes, struggling to resonate with a public still prioritizing comfort and ease in the post-lockdown era. Despite runways hinting at a return to formal attire, consumers largely sought effortless clothing.

Today, there's a renewed enthusiasm for sophisticated dressing, and the runways for Fall 2026 reflect this shift, thanks to visionary designers such as Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Jonathan Anderson at Dior, and Michael Rider at Celine. This time, designers and the public appear to be in perfect harmony, redefining what it truly means to embody 'ladylike' style with a much-needed contemporary twist.

Modern style icons approach their wardrobes with greater flexibility. They see a classic tweed suit from Chanel as equally essential as comfortable flip-flops from The Row or a vintage concert tee. While an inherent sense of ease remains central to their dressing philosophy, the prevailing trend is now towards elevation rather than simplification. This means pairing a beloved sweatshirt with luxurious satin trousers and pristine white kid gloves, or styling a gleaming gold jacquard skirt with robust men's sandals instead of delicate heels. Coco Chanel's famous advice to remove one accessory before leaving the house has been supplanted by a desire to strategically add elements. Pearls, in particular, are enjoying a resurgence, especially in unconventional designs or colors beyond traditional iridescent white. Oversized handbags are seamlessly carried from day to evening, and the deliberate mixing of prints and colors is not only accepted but enthusiastically embraced.

Perhaps the most compelling modern idea presented by designers is that contemporary 'ladylike' dressing no longer necessitates being a 'lady' in the conventional sense. More than anything, it demands an eagerness to indulge in glamour, and perhaps even a certain resilience for the meticulousness that such glamour often entails.
