Review: 'Kevin' is a Charming and Witty Feline Coming-of-Age Story

Ricky Gervais

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

Joe Wengert and Aubrey Plaza, drawing inspiration from Wengert's previous work on "Big Mouth," have crafted a distinctive animated series titled "Kevin." This show, available on Amazon Prime Video, cleverly anthropomorphizes household pets, offering a fresh take on character-driven comedy. The central figure is Kevin, a tuxedo cat voiced by Jason Schwartzman, whose world is turned upside down when his human companions separate. Instead of choosing one owner, Kevin embarks on an independent journey, finding refuge and a new community in a local animal shelter.

"Kevin" masterfully blends the overtly humorous with genuine emotional depth, much like "Big Mouth." The animation style, produced by Titmouse, shares some aesthetic similarities with its predecessor. The series features a vibrant cast of characters, including Whoopi Goldberg as Cupcake, a free-spirited feral cat, and John Waters as Armando, a worldly Persian cat who becomes a mentor to Kevin. The narrative unfolds through episodic adventures, incorporating pop culture references, urban escapades, and clever animal-themed wordplay. Notable guest appearances by figures like Charles Melton, Patti LuPone, and Stephen Malkmus further enrich the show's eclectic appeal.

Kevin's journey is one of profound self-exploration, as he grapples with his desire for independence versus the comfort of human connection, or perhaps charting an entirely new course. While the show's universe, where animals and humans communicate freely and geese creatively open wine bottles, embraces a delightful lack of realism, it consistently maintains a clear focus on Kevin's personal growth. His transformation from a timid, domesticated feline to a resilient and self-assured cat, ready to face life's unpredictable challenges, provides a compelling narrative thread amidst the series' enjoyable chaos.

This animated comedy transcends simple entertainment, offering a refreshing perspective on resilience and the importance of self-discovery. It reminds us that even in the most unconventional circumstances, the journey to understand oneself and find one's place in the world is both vital and profoundly rewarding. The show's vibrant characters and witty narratives encourage viewers to embrace life's inherent unpredictability with courage and an open heart, reinforcing the idea that true independence often lies in forging one's unique path.
