In a significant move towards bolstering water security, Rio Tinto Group and the Western Australian Government have formally partnered in a joint venture. This collaboration focuses on the comprehensive development of the Dampier Seawater Desalination Plant, encompassing both its initial and subsequent phases. Upon full operational status, this facility is projected to contribute 8 gigaliters of desalinated water annually to the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme, thereby substantially easing the strain on the area's natural groundwater resources.

The first phase of the desalination plant is currently under construction and is anticipated to begin supplying 4 gigaliters of water by the end of the current year. Following this, the second phase will commence, aiming to add an additional 4 gigaliters to the plant's yearly capacity, with an expected completion and initial water delivery in 2027. This integrated approach for both stages is designed to significantly reduce the reliance on the Bungaroo and Millstream aquifers, ensuring a more sustainable water future for the region. The West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme plays a crucial role in providing water to several key towns and industrial zones, including Karratha, Wickham, Dampier, Roebourne, Point Samson, Cape Lambert, and the Burrup Peninsula.

This joint venture between Rio Tinto and the WA Government is built upon a prior Memorandum of Understanding established in 2025. This agreement outlined a shared commitment to enhancing water resilience across the Pilbara region.
