Shanghai Festival Kicks Off with Hong Kong Drama "Afterpiece"

Opening Night Premiere: The Intriguing "Afterpiece"

The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival recently announced that its opening night will feature the world premiere of "Afterpiece." This Hong Kong-produced psychological drama is the debut feature film from director Keane T.K. Wong and is produced by the highly respected industry veteran, Derek Yee. The festival's complete program is scheduled to be revealed on June 3, with the event running from June 12 to 21 this year.

The Narrative Core of "Afterpiece"

Penned and helmed by Wong, "Afterpiece" delves into the life of Owen, a renowned stage director grappling with a decade-long creative stagnation. His world is further complicated by the re-emergence of a former lover and his wife's impending infidelity. In a desperate bid for artistic revival, Owen decides to write, direct, and star in a new theatrical production. However, his journey takes a perilous turn as he becomes deeply entwined with an inexperienced young actress he encounters during casting, blurring the lines between his stage persona and his real life. The film features a talented cast, including Stephen Fung as Owen, supported by Chrissie Chau, Myolie Wu, and Angela Yuen.

Mentorship and Filmmaking Excellence

The development of "Afterpiece" was fostered through the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government's Directors' Succession Scheme, which pairs established filmmakers with new talent. Derek Yee, known for his gritty crime dramas like "One Nite in Mongkok" (2004), "Protégé" (2007), and "Shinjuku Incident" (2009), as well as the critically acclaimed romantic drama "C'est la Vie, Mon Chéri" (1993), served as a crucial mentor. Wong's prior experience includes behind-the-scenes work on various commercial Hong Kong productions, such as "I Am Somebody," "Sword Master," and "In Search of Lost Time."

Distinguished Jury for the Golden Goblet Awards

The festival also unveiled the full roster of jury members for its Golden Goblet Awards, spanning five competitive categories. Tony Leung Chiu-wai, previously announced as the president of the main competition jury, will lead a seven-member panel. This esteemed group includes Chinese director Guan Hu, whose film "Black Dog" won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes in 2024; Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha, a significant figure in North African cinema; Georgian writer-director Déa Kulumbegashvili, whose feature "April" competed at Venice in 2024; Mexican filmmaker Fernanda Valadez, a Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award winner in 2020; Kyrgyz director Aktan Arym Kubat, a veteran of the international film circuit; and Chinese actress Xin Zhilei, who received the best actress award at Venice last year for "The Sun Rises on Us All."

Diverse Talent Across Award Categories

The Asian New Talent section will be presided over by Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen, celebrated for his 2013 Camera d'Or-winning film, "Ilo Ilo." The documentary jury will be chaired by U.S. filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir, an Oscar nominee for "The Perfect Neighbor" and "The Devil Is Busy." Completing the lineup, British animator Will Becher, known for "A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon," will chair the animation section, highlighting the festival's commitment to recognizing diverse cinematic achievement
