The Simpsons: No Grand Finale Planned, Says Showrunner Matt Selman

The iconic animated series, known for its timeless humor and enduring characters, has no plans for a definitive conclusion, according to its lead creative force. Instead, the show embraces its perpetual nature, ensuring that its beloved family and their adventures will continue without a grand, final farewell.

The Perpetual Cycle: Why The Simpsons Will Never Truly End

The Showrunner's Stance on a Grand Finale

Matt Selman, the guiding hand behind the cherished animated sitcom, has firmly declared that fans should not anticipate a dramatic conclusion to the series. As the show enters its 37th season, Selman emphasizes that a traditional, conclusive finale is simply not part of their creative vision for the enduring program.

Parodying the Farewell: A Mock Finale's Purpose

Selman recently revealed in an interview that the team had previously crafted an episode that playfully mimicked a series finale. This special installment humorously incorporated every conceivable ending trope, serving as a clear message that the show has no intention of ever delivering a genuine, definitive conclusion. It was designed to poke fun at the concept of wrapping everything up neatly.

"Bart's Birthday" - A Meta-Commentary on Endings

The 36th season's premiere, titled "Bart's Birthday," acted as this meta-commentary on series finales. Featuring Conan O'Brien, a former writer for the show, the episode utilized an AI service named HackGPT to generate a comically exaggerated conclusion for the series. This satirical approach allowed the creators to explore numerous potential final scenarios, from Mr. Burns' demise to Milhouse relocating, without actually ending the show.

Rejecting Sentimental Farewells

Selman firmly believes that a sentimental, overly emotional series finale would betray the essence of the show. He expressed that if the program were ever to cease production, its final episode should simply be a typical installment featuring the family, perhaps with a few subtle nods to its legacy, rather than a tearful goodbye. The core principle of the series is its unchanging nature and the weekly reset of its characters' lives.

A Flexible Canon and Ever-Evolving Narrative

Selman has previously discussed his flexible approach to the show's continuity, prioritizing compelling storytelling and character development over strict adherence to a fixed timeline. He views the series as a whimsical, lighthearted program where past events can be revisited or reinterpreted for comedic and narrative effect, without being bound by rigid historical accuracy within its fictional universe.

Celebrating 800 Episodes: A Milestone for Springfield

As the series approaches its monumental 800th episode, "Irrational Treasure," set to air on Fox, it continues to attract a star-studded cast of guest voice actors. Celebrities like Quinta Brunson, Kevin Bacon, Questlove, Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Taylor Dearden are slated to appear, with Boyz II Men contributing special musical performances in an episode that takes the family to Philadelphia.
