A recent financial disclosure reveals that Situational Awareness LP has completely sold its investment in Western Digital Corporation (WDC), a significant development given WDC's recent impressive financial achievements. Previously, WDC's stock first appeared in the fund's 13F portfolio during the fourth quarter of 2025, holding a substantial position of 152,000 shares.
Western Digital, a leading manufacturer and distributor of data storage solutions across the globe, including in the United States, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, has recently seen its operational landscape redefined. Following the strategic spin-off of its flash memory division into the independent entity SanDisk last year, WDC has successfully transformed into a focused, high-margin leader in the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) market. This strategic shift has enabled the company to achieve remarkable financial milestones, such as a record non-GAAP gross margin of 50.5% in Q3 2026, marking a 1,040 basis point increase year-over-year and its highest ever. This unprecedented profitability is attributed to stringent cost management and a surge in demand, which has also led to a dramatic increase in average HDD prices. Major cloud providers are now securing long-term supply contracts, and WDC's high-capacity nearline drive production is almost fully booked for the current calendar year. These factors have propelled operating income by 116% year-over-year, reaching $1.3 billion, and pushing operating margins to 35.7%.
Despite Western Digital Corporation's robust financial health and strong market position, Situational Awareness LP's decision to divest its holdings suggests a strategic reallocation of capital. The firm's assessment indicates a belief that other investment opportunities, particularly within the artificial intelligence sector, present more attractive growth prospects and carry less inherent risk. This perspective underscores a broader market trend where investors are actively seeking sectors that promise higher returns, even as established companies like WDC demonstrate significant operational success. It highlights the dynamic nature of investment strategies, where even strong performers can be overshadowed by emerging opportunities with perceived greater upside.
