As the 2026 tax filing season progresses, individuals aiming for a swift tax refund are advised to prioritize accuracy and efficiency in their submissions. With significant changes to the tax code and potential operational challenges at the IRS, strategic filing is more crucial than ever.

According to experts like Enrolled Agent Kesha Dawson Harris, timely refunds are directly linked to the precision and promptness of tax return submissions. Taxpayers should ensure all necessary documentation is gathered and reviewed for accuracy before filing. Electronically submitting your tax return is generally recommended, as the IRS typically processes e-filed refunds within 21 days, significantly faster than the six weeks or more it can take for paper returns. Any discrepancies or errors in a tax return, such as incorrect dependent information or unreported income, can lead to substantial delays in receiving a refund. Even minor math errors or outstanding debts can trigger holds on an account, extending the processing time beyond the standard period.

The 2026 tax year is particularly notable due to the retroactive effects of the "One Big Beautiful Bill." This legislative package introduces new and enhanced tax credits and deductions, including provisions for "no tax on tips" and a "senior deduction." These changes are anticipated to result in larger refunds for many taxpayers. Morgan Stanley U.S. Economist Heather Berger projects a 15% to 20% increase in average refunds, attributing this to the various tax cuts embedded in the new fiscal bill. This potential for higher refunds, however, comes with a caveat. The IRS experienced significant layoffs in 2025, which are expected to contribute to notable delays in processing during the 2026 filing season. Therefore, while the financial benefits may be greater, taxpayers should prepare for possible extended waiting periods.

To further accelerate the refund process, direct deposit is highly recommended. By providing bank account details on their tax return, taxpayers can have their refunds deposited directly into their accounts, bypassing the delays associated with traditional paper checks. This method, combined with accurate and early electronic filing, offers the best chance for taxpayers to receive their refunds as quickly as possible, mitigating the impact of potential IRS operational issues and maximizing the benefits of the new tax legislation.
