Thai Director Sompot Chidgasornpongse Premieres '9 Temples to Heaven' at Cannes Directors' Fortnight

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Thai filmmaker Sompot Chidgasornpongse is marking a significant milestone in his career, debuting his first feature film, "9 Temples to Heaven," at the prestigious Cannes Directors' Fortnight. Having honed his craft for over two decades as an assistant director for renowned artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul on critically acclaimed works such as "Tropical Malady" and "Memoria," Chidgasornpongse now steps into the spotlight with a narrative deeply personal and culturally resonant.

The film, a poignant ensemble drama, centers on a family's day-long spiritual journey across Thailand, visiting nine sacred temples. This pilgrimage is initiated by the protagonist, Sakol, after a prophetic warning regarding his elderly mother's health. Chidgasornpongse reveals that this ritual is a direct reflection of his own family's practices, highlighting the blend of personal belief and cinematic exploration. The director's architectural background from CalArts influences the film's structure, which he conceived before fully developing the narrative details, resulting in a road movie that unfolds from dawn till dusk, capturing the essence of travel and reflection. The script itself was forged during a period of political unrest in Thailand, mirroring the societal divisions and intergenerational tensions that subtly weave through the family's interactions in the film.

The film delves into the ritual of Sangkatan, where offerings are made to the monastic community, portraying an authentic glimpse into modern Thai temple life. Chidgasornpongse expresses his honor in premiering at Directors' Fortnight, a section that has historically celebrated films that have profoundly shaped his own artistic vision. His mentor, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, serves as a producer on the project, underscoring a lasting collaborative relationship, while Chidgasornpongse playfully notes his mentor's lack of experience with large family ensemble films, a genre he now bravely explores.

"9 Temples to Heaven" is more than just a film; it's a profound journey into faith, family, and cultural identity. It reminds us that art often emerges from the deepest wells of personal experience and observation, offering unique perspectives on universal themes. This debut challenges us to reflect on our own beliefs and traditions, and how they shape our understanding of the world and our place within it. The film stands as a testament to the power of storytelling to bridge generational divides and illuminate the complex interplay between tradition and modernity.
