Unconventional Scouting Led to Balatro's Success

Head designer for "Magic: The Gathering" and author of long-running insights on game design.

In a gaming industry often driven by algorithms and data, the remarkable success story of Balatro, crowned PC Gamer's 2024 Game of the Year, offers a refreshing perspective. Playstack, an indie game publisher, stumbled upon this gem not through sophisticated analytics or trending wishlists, but through the dedicated, old-fashioned legwork of its head of discovery, Patrick Johnson. His diligent daily review of new Steam releases, a practice he emphasizes as 'boring work with a dose of good old-fashioned stick-to-itiveness,' proved instrumental in unearthing a title that initially had minimal traction but immense potential. This hands-on approach highlights that genuine passion and persistent exploration can still lead to groundbreaking discoveries, empowering indie developers and enriching the gaming landscape.

Playstack's Manual Game Scouting Yields Unforeseen Triumph with Balatro

During a presentation highlighted in the 2026 GDC Trends Report, Patrick Johnson, Playstack's head of discovery, shed light on the unconventional path that led his team to collaborate with LocalThunk, the creator of the acclaimed game Balatro. Johnson revealed that his strategy largely bypassed conventional metrics like Steam wishlists, which he now views as less critical indicators of a game's future success. Instead, his method involved a meticulous, daily examination of every new title launched on the Steam platform.

It was through this painstaking process, around May or June 2023, that Johnson first encountered Balatro. Despite its nascent presence with few followers or wishlists at the time, the game's intrinsic appeal immediately caught his attention. He recalled, "I saw the game the day it went up on Steam." Recognizing its unique charm, Playstack decided to extend an offer to the then-unknown developer, LocalThunk, who, according to his own account, had only a handful of followers on Twitter. This outreach proved to be a pivotal moment, transforming LocalThunk's aspirations from merely hoping for something to come of his game to envisioning it as a viable career. Johnson affirmed the speed of their engagement was crucial: "We were in there really early. And I think that made the key difference." This proactive partnership not only provided LocalThunk with vital resources but also ensured Balatro reached a broad audience, ultimately securing its status as a critical darling.

This narrative serves as a powerful reminder that while technology and data play an ever-increasing role in content discovery, the human element—curiosity, persistence, and a keen eye for quality—remains irreplaceable. Johnson's story underscores the value of looking beyond the obvious and investing in direct engagement with creators. In an oversaturated market, a personalized, proactive scouting approach can be the catalyst that transforms overlooked projects into celebrated successes. It challenges the industry to reconsider the balance between automated discovery and the invaluable insights gleaned from dedicated human curation, particularly for burgeoning independent titles.
