Baywatch Production Secures Overnight Parking Approval from Coastal Commission

Shonda Rhimes

Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

The production of the popular series "Baywatch" has received crucial authorization from the California Coastal Commission, granting permission for their vehicles to remain parked overnight at Venice Beach. This development addresses earlier logistical hurdles encountered by the film crew, which previously required daily removal of vehicles from the site. The newly approved, modified permit facilitates smoother operations for the television show's production.

This revised permit specifically allows for overnight parking across 27 spaces located near the Venice lifeguard headquarters. Initially, the production was mandated to vacate all vehicles by 8 p.m. each evening. Furthermore, the permit's validity period has been extended from its original end date of July 16 to August 7, accommodating delays that occurred during the construction of the set. The executive director of the Coastal Commission also retains the discretion to grant further extensions beyond August 7, should there be valid reasons.

While an earlier request for nighttime filming was not incorporated into the final approval, daily filming hours remain set from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a brief grace period. However, the executive director maintains the authority to permit some nighttime filming with prior notification. A spokesman for the commission expressed satisfaction with the agreed-upon terms, noting that all parties are content with the outcome. The commission also sanctioned an alternative, more convenient route for transporting equipment between the set and the parking area, ensuring minimal disruption to public access and recreation, and the amendment passed unopposed.

This cooperative resolution between the "Baywatch" production and the California Coastal Commission exemplifies effective communication and adaptability in overcoming administrative challenges. By addressing the practical needs of the film crew while upholding public access principles, this agreement paves the way for continued success in entertainment production, fostering a positive environment for both creative endeavors and community interests.
