A new documentary series is set to capture the thrilling world of competitive sailing, offering viewers an intimate look at the Australian SailGP team, the Bonds Flying Roos. This venture, reminiscent of the popular 'Welcome to Wrexham' format, is spearheaded by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who are co-owners of the team. The series promises to delve into the intense global racing season, highlighting the speed, pressure, and high stakes involved in this unique sport.

Disney+ Unveils New Sailing Docuseries with Hollywood Star Power

On May 29, 2026, Disney+ officially announced the greenlighting of a compelling new docuseries. This project will chronicle the journey of the Bonds Flying Roos, the Australian SailGP team jointly owned by acclaimed actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The series will provide unprecedented access to the team's experiences throughout a demanding global racing season. Viewers will witness the raw excitement of SailGP, a stadium-style championship where identical 50-foot catamarans compete at incredible speeds, reaching up to 100 km/h, on courses close to shore.

Jackman and Reynolds, known for their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, expressed their enthusiasm for this project. They humorously anticipate the series to be filled with action, comedy, and heart, albeit with a significant amount of water, and hopefully, pirates. Eric Schrier, President of Direct-to-Consumer International Originals, Strategic Programming, and Emerging Media at Disney+, echoed this excitement, emphasizing the unique insight the series will offer into the sport and the dedication required to compete at its pinnacle.

The docuseries, an Australian Original, is being produced by Reynolds' Maximum Effort and Eureka Productions, in collaboration with SailGP and the Bonds Flying Roos team. Brent Hodge is set to direct and serve as showrunner. Rob Mac, co-chairman of Wrexham AFC and executive producer of 'Welcome to Wrexham,' will also executive produce through his More Better Productions. The series will be exclusively available on Disney+ internationally, and on Disney+ and Hulu in the United States.

This initiative represents an exciting fusion of sports and entertainment, bringing the dynamic world of SailGP to a broader audience. The involvement of celebrity owners like Reynolds and Jackman, combined with a production team known for captivating sports documentaries, suggests a compelling narrative that will not only entertain but also shed light on the demanding nature of professional sailing.
