Echo Weaver: A Fresh Take on Metroidvania with Time Loops

Moonlight Kids, acclaimed for their 2021 success The Wild at Heart, is set to release their new platformer, Echo Weaver, next month. This title innovatively blends characteristics of a Metroidvania and a roguelite, placing significant emphasis on intricate puzzles and meticulously designed levels, offering an experience that feels both familiar and distinctly original.

The game immerses players in an unfamiliar alien world, granting them the freedom to explore until their time runs out or they meet an untimely end. Each exploration phase, or 'cycle,' yields new insights. Upon restarting, players return to familiar corridors—which are hand-crafted, not procedurally generated—and must leverage the knowledge acquired from their prior attempts. As the gameplay progresses, the in-game world naturally expands, revealing new pathways and uncovering mysteries within the enigmatic complex, potentially leading to self-discovery.

Chris Sumsky, a co-founder of Moonlight Kids and the game's designer and programmer, explained the inspiration behind Echo Weaver's design, drawing parallels to the 2019 indie sensation, Outer Wilds. Sumsky noted that while time-loop games, knowledge-gated games, and platformers exist independently, their studio sought to ingeniously combine these distinct elements into a cohesive and novel experience. He highlighted that the core enjoyment of the game stems from genuine discovery, where advancement is not merely about acquiring new items or abilities, but rather about the player's evolving understanding of the world.

The gameplay experience, despite the inherent pressure of a time limit, is not overly intense. During a 90-minute demo, I encountered only a handful of adversaries, which brought to mind a nostalgic memory of playing a Super Metroid demo and being captivated by its alien corridors. In Echo Weaver, players are consistently presented with new objectives. Each new cycle encourages a direct return to areas where time previously expired, driven by a desire to delve deeper into their concealed secrets. The game's unique weapon, a versatile blade, serves multiple purposes beyond combat, such as lodging in walls and activating distant switches, continually transforming the gameplay with each new discovery.

Sumsky shared that the initial estimate for completing the game was between six and eight hours. However, as development concludes and playtesting progresses, the team now anticipates a potentially longer journey, particularly when factoring in the substantial amount of side content. He also hinted at a 'super ending,' adding another layer of intrigue and encouraging players to uncover these captivating secrets for themselves. Echo Weaver is slated for release on October 8th, available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
