Rising Star Catherine Laga'aia Joins 'Crashout' Thriller Production in Australia

In a significant announcement at the European Film Market in Berlin, Deadhouse Films revealed that Catherine Laga'aia, the acclaimed actress cast as the titular character in Disney's much-anticipated live-action adaptation of 'Moana,' will take on the leading role in their new Australian Gen-Z thriller, 'Crashout.' This marks a pivotal next step in Laga'aia's burgeoning career.

The film, penned and helmed by 19-year-old filmmaker Nick Annas, centers on three high school graduates whose lives take a dark turn after a tragic car accident leaves them stranded on a desolate highway. In a desperate attempt to conceal their involvement and avoid accountability, the trio devises a scheme to fabricate a found footage film, hoping to mislead authorities and the public. 'Crashout' is described as a darkly comedic satirical thriller, delving into complex themes of survival instincts and the manipulation of truth from the unique perspective of today's youth. Annas revealed that he conceived the screenplay at just 17 years old, often writing in his childhood bedroom or during high school classes.

The production team includes Helen Tuck and Enzo Tedeschi from Deadhouse Films as producers, with Deanne Weir of WeirAnderson Films joining Bobby Romia and Tianna Roberts of the newly formed Atypical Originals as executive producers. Casting responsibilities are being managed by Stephanie Pringle and Alison Fowler of Chicken and Chips Casting. Principal photography for 'Crashout' is slated to commence in Australia in March. Laga'aia is represented by a formidable team of agencies, including the Agency at AIPA, Venture Entertainment Partners, CAA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

The casting of Catherine Laga'aia in 'Crashout' represents an exciting blend of emerging talent and a fresh narrative approach. Her transition from a high-profile family-friendly Disney production to a darker, more complex thriller demonstrates an admirable artistic versatility. This move, as director Nick Annas aptly put it, showcases a "fearless pivot" and brings a bold energy to the film. 'Crashout' offers a timely examination of how young people navigate extreme situations, grapple with moral dilemmas, and attempt to control their own stories in an age saturated with digital media. The film's unique premise and the youthful vision behind it suggest a compelling and thought-provoking cinematic experience that could resonate deeply with modern audiences.
