Neon has secured the North American distribution rights for the upcoming film by celebrated director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, titled 'All Of A Sudden'. This latest project from the filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning 'Drive My Car' is currently in post-production and is anticipated to have a wide theatrical release. The acquisition underscores Neon's continued commitment to bringing compelling international cinema to audiences.
The agreement grants Neon exclusive North American rights to the feature. 'All Of A Sudden' features an international cast, with Virginie Efira taking on the role of a French care home director and Tao Okamoto portraying a Japanese theater director. The screenplay, co-written by Hamaguchi and Léa Le Dimna, is an adaptation inspired by a poignant collection of real letters. These correspondences were originally published in the book 'When Life Suddenly Takes a Turn: Twenty Letters Between a Philosopher with Terminal Cancer and Medical Anthropologist' by Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono, lending a deeply personal and philosophical foundation to the narrative.
The production of 'All Of A Sudden' involved a collaborative effort across multiple countries. David Gauquié, Julien Deris, Jean-Luc Ormières, and Renan Artukmaç represented Paris-based Cinefrance Studios as producers. From Japan, Hiroko Matsuda, Kosuke Oshida, and Yuji Sadai produced on behalf of Office Shirous & Bitters End. Additionally, Bettina Brokemper served as producer for Germany's Heimatfilm, and Joseph Rouschop for Belgium's Tarantula, highlighting the film's international scope.
Hamaguchi's previous work, 'Evil Does Not Exist', garnered critical acclaim, including the Silver Lion at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Neon's upcoming releases also include Boots Riley’s 'I Love Boosters', which is scheduled to premiere at the SXSW film festival, featuring Keke Palmer, Demi Moore, Naomi Ackie, and Taylour Paige. The deal for 'All Of A Sudden' was facilitated by Cinefrance, representing the filmmakers.
This strategic move by Neon to distribute Ryusuke Hamaguchi's new work further solidifies its position as a key player in showcasing diverse and artistically significant films to North American audiences. The film's intriguing premise and the director's proven track record suggest it will be a noteworthy addition to the cinematic landscape.
