The Carolina Hurricanes secured their second NHL championship by defeating the Vegas Golden Knights with a 3-0 score, clinching the series four games to two. The entire six-game series maintained a strong average of 5.2 million viewers, also surpassing all previous finals since 2019. This year's final stands out as the most-viewed under the NHL's current media rights arrangement, which sees ABC/ESPN and TNT Sports alternate broadcasting the championship. The 2026 figures more than doubled the 2.55 million average viewership recorded by TNT Sports for the 2025 series and represented a substantial 26 percent increase compared to ABC's last broadcast in 2024.

During the critical moments of Game Six on Sunday, viewership reached its peak between 10:45 PM and 11:00 PM ET, with 7.2 million people tuning in to witness the Carolina Hurricanes seal their championship title.

The NHL's heightened visibility in 2026 can be partly attributed to its embrace of pop culture, with popular shows like 'Heated Rivalry' and 'Off Campus'—both derived from best-selling romance novels set in the hockey world—introducing new fans to the sport. Both ESPN (including ABC) and TNT Sports experienced improved ratings throughout the earlier stages of the NHL playoffs. ESPN platforms recorded their most-watched playoffs ever, attracting an average of 2.2 million viewers per game, a record not seen since the 1994-2002 period. Similarly, TNT Sports achieved its best playoff performance since 2022, averaging 1.4 million viewers per game, with a 50 percent year-over-year increase through the conference final round. This period has been particularly successful for ESPN and ABC, as they also reported their highest NBA Finals viewership since 1998, with 20.6 million viewers tuning in.

The remarkable television ratings for the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Final signify a significant growth in the league's audience and overall engagement. This renewed interest underscores the successful strategies employed to broaden hockey's appeal, leveraging both traditional broadcasting and contemporary cultural phenomena to draw in new demographics.
