This article explores a groundbreaking partnership between two major management entities, Excel Sports Management and WIN Artists. This alliance is designed to bridge the gap between the sports and entertainment industries, offering athletes enhanced opportunities in a rapidly evolving media environment.

Bridging Worlds: Athletes' New Frontier in Media and Entertainment

A Unique Collaboration in Talent Management

Excel Sports Management and WIN Artists have announced an innovative commercial partnership, uniting their distinct strengths. This collaboration aims to provide Excel's diverse group of athletes with access to WIN's specialized knowledge in media, entertainment, and content production. This strategic move acknowledges the increasing overlap between the worlds of professional sports and global entertainment.

The Convergence of Sports and Entertainment

As athletes increasingly engage with media platforms through podcasts, social media, and other digital content, the traditional boundaries between sports and entertainment are blurring. This partnership is poised to maximize these emerging opportunities, allowing both active and retired athletes to further their careers beyond their respective fields.

Key Players in the Alliance

Excel Sports Management, which recently came under the ownership of a Goldman Sachs division, boasts an impressive client list including renowned figures such as Tiger Woods, Nikola Jokic, Caitlin Clark, Derek Jeter, and Clayton Kershaw. WIN Artists, a venture of Patrick Whitesell's investment firm WTSL, is led by Josh Pyatt and represents notable clients like Bryson DeChambeau, Shaquille O'Neal's Jersey Legends, Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions, and Derek Jeter's Cap 2.

Synergy for Enhanced Business Opportunities

Kevin Hopkins, Excel's senior VP of media talent, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that the combined resources of both companies would lead to significant growth. He highlighted WIN's expertise in production and Excel's strong reputation in talent representation and sales as key drivers for this strategic alignment, noting a promising start to their joint efforts.

Early Successes and Market Expansion

The collaboration has already yielded positive results, securing deals for former MLB stars Clayton Kershaw and Anthony Rizzo with NBC Sunday Night Baseball, and for Rizzo with Netflix's opening day game and the upcoming Home Run Derby. Josh Pyatt emphasized the mutual benefits, noting that the partnership expands WIN's access to a broader client roster and provides Excel with expertise in the entertainment sector beyond traditional sports.

Navigating Complex Market Dynamics

Adding a layer of complexity, both Excel and WTSL are reportedly among the potential bidders for The Team (formerly Wasserman), a company with a significant presence across sports, music, and entertainment. While both firms remain interested in the acquisition, a deal with WTSL is not considered a top priority at this time.

Athletes as Modern Superstars

WIN Artists was founded on the premise that athletes are the new global celebrities, leveraging social media, streaming, and other platforms. This shift means athletes are now actively pursuing media ventures during the peak of their careers, a stark contrast to past trends where such opportunities were typically explored post-retirement.

Evolving Career Trajectories for Athletes

Hopkins pointed out that discussions about post-career opportunities, which once occurred much later, are now happening early in athletes' careers. Pyatt credited figures like Michael Strahan with demonstrating that athletes can successfully transition into entertainment, inspiring a new generation to explore entrepreneurial and media-related endeavors while still competing at the highest level.

Diverse Avenues for Media Engagement

This partnership extends beyond traditional broadcast roles, encompassing a wide array of ventures such as YouTube shows, podcasts, and other entrepreneurial content. Ryan Orozco, Excel's head of digital media talent, highlighted the rapid evolution of the media landscape and the partnership's role in accelerating their focus on owned intellectual property and digital content, addressing the diverse platforms where audiences engage with their clients.
