Veteran German film producer Martin Moszkowicz, celebrated for his involvement in projects like 'September 5' and the 'Resident Evil' series, has been appointed as the new President of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). This significant announcement was made by the ZFF on a recent Wednesday. Moszkowicz is poised to bring his extensive experience and influential connections within the international film industry to lead the festival into its next chapter, taking on both the presidency and the chairmanship of the ZFF board of directors.

Moszkowicz's tenure is set to commence on July 1, as he steps into the role previously held by Doris Fiala. Christian Jungen, the CEO of the Zurich Film Festival, expressed great enthusiasm for this appointment. Jungen highlighted Moszkowicz's creative background and deep familiarity with the festival as key assets. Furthermore, Moszkowicz's robust network in both Munich and Los Angeles is anticipated to significantly bolster the festival's footprint and relationships in its crucial international markets: Germany and the United States. Jungen lauded Moszkowicz as an inspiring and highly respected figure in the global film industry, confident that his leadership will elevate the ZFF's status as a globally recognized brand synonymous with exceptional cinematic experiences and a strong tie to the awards circuit.

Moszkowicz's career spans over three decades, prominently featuring his time at Constantin Film, a Munich-based mini-major. Joining in 1990, he ascended to chairman in 2014, a position he held until 2024. During his leadership at Constantin, he oversaw the creation of numerous films, including many German cross-over hits and acclaimed international productions. Notable works under his supervision include the Oscar-nominated 'Downfall' (2004) and 'The Baader Meinhof Complex' (2008), alongside highly successful German blockbusters such as the 'Fack Ju Göhte' franchise. His extensive international production portfolio includes the popular 'Resident Evil' films. In recognition of his enduring contributions to cinema, Moszkowicz received a lifetime 'Career Achievement in Film' award from CinemaCon in 2022. Although he resigned as chairman of Constantin in March 2024, he continues to collaborate with the company as a producer.

Reflecting on his new role, Moszkowicz noted that the Zurich Film Festival has firmly established itself as a staple in the European festival calendar. He believes its dedication to quality cinema and its strong links to the international awards season position it for global recognition in the coming years. He particularly emphasized the significance of the ZFF's industry section, the Zurich Summit—often dubbed the 'Davos of the film industry'—as a leading platform for the global film business, possessing substantial potential for continued expansion. Joining Moszkowicz on the ZFF board are Claudia Lässer, CEO of Swiss media group Entertainment Programm AG, and Swiss writer/director Sabine Boss, known for films such as 'Open Season' and 'I Am the Keeper.' They will serve alongside existing board members Thomas Hügi and Felix E. Müller. The upcoming Zurich Film Festival is scheduled to run from September 24 to October 4, with the Zurich Summit taking place from September 25-27.

The appointment of Martin Moszkowicz marks a pivotal moment for the Zurich Film Festival, signaling an ambition to further solidify its standing on the global stage. With his vast experience in film production and deep industry ties, Moszkowicz is expected to enhance the festival's artistic vision and expand its international reach. His leadership is anticipated to attract more high-caliber cinematic works and strengthen the festival's role as a significant event in the international film calendar, drawing on his proven track record of fostering both critical and commercial success.
