Berlin Festival Spotlights 'Light Pillar' with Exclusive Premiere
On February 15, 2026, the Berlin Film Festival's esteemed Perspectives section featured an exclusive unveiling of a new clip from "Light Pillar," the much-anticipated first feature film by Chinese writer-director Xu Zao. The film is also in contention for the best first feature award within its category. Dubai's prominent sales company, Cercamon, has secured the global distribution rights for this unique production, amplifying its international reach. The narrative centers on a solitary janitor, portrayed by Da Peng, who also serves as an executive producer. This janitor toils within an aging film studio and becomes deeply immersed in a virtual romantic entanglement. However, his digital fantasy begins to unravel with the arrival of a film crew intent on shooting an alien invasion movie on the dilapidated studio grounds. As the studio faces its impending demise, the janitor chooses to disappear alongside it, creating a poignant and mysterious conclusion to his journey. The film's producer is Lu Xiaowei.
Xu Zao, a distinguished alumnus of the Beijing Film Academy's School of Fine Art, brings a rich artistic background to this project. His 43-minute animated work, "No Changes Have Taken In Our Life," previously garnered international acclaim, premiering at the Rotterdam festival in 2023 and earning the Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig, in addition to the Grand Prize at Japan's Image Forum Festival. For "Light Pillar," Xu not only directed but also meticulously crafted the screenplay and storyboards, showcasing his comprehensive creative vision. The director elaborated on his artistic choices, stating that while the story is set in the future, its core themes of love and happiness are deeply rooted in contemporary life, often overlooked amidst daily distractions. He highlighted the deliberate reversal of traditional visual techniques: animation represents the protagonist's stark reality, while live-action brings his vivid virtual world to life, emphasizing the character's perception of a flat reality contrasted with an infinitely rich digital realm.
"Light Pillar" stands as a testament to innovative storytelling and visual artistry, challenging conventional perceptions of reality and escapism. Its selection and exclusive clip release at the Berlin Film Festival underscore its significance as a boundary-pushing work in contemporary cinema.
