Broadway's 'Just in Time' Reclaims $12.5M Investment, a Rare Achievement in Modern Theater

The Broadway production of 'Just in Time' has successfully recovered its initial $12.5 million investment, making it the inaugural musical of the 2024-25 season to achieve this financial landmark. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy given the increasing expenses associated with theatrical productions, which often make it challenging for shows to turn a profit. The musical, which chronicles the life and career of singer Bobby Darrin, has maintained consistent popularity, evidenced by its robust box office performance and a forthcoming North American tour.

The musical commenced its run on March 31, 2025, at Broadway's historic Circle in the Square Theatre, officially opening to the public on April 26. Jonathan Groff originated the lead role of Bobby Darrin, captivating audiences with renditions of Darrin's iconic songs, including "Beyond the Sea" and "Splish Splash." Under the direction of Alex Timbers, the production quickly garnered a loyal following, consistently setting new weekly box office records for its venue.

A significant highlight in the show's financial journey was the final week of Jonathan Groff's tenure in March, when the musical achieved its highest weekly gross, surpassing $2 million. Even after Groff's departure, with Matthew Morrison temporarily stepping into the role and Jeremy Jordan currently starring as Darrin, the production has continued to command impressive weekly earnings, consistently exceeding $800,000.

This recoupment stands out as a rare feat in contemporary musical theater. High production costs frequently prevent shows from breaking even, let alone generating a profit. 'Just in Time' is the sole musical from its season to announce recoupment, joining a select group of productions in recent years that have achieved this success, such as 'The Outsiders' (from the 2024-25 season), 'Six' (2021-22), 'MJ' (2021-22), '& Juliet,' and 'Moulin Rouge!'

While three plays from the 2025-26 season have also recouped their investments, these have typically been celebrity-led productions. Notably, 'Every Brilliant Thing,' starring Daniel Radcliffe, announced its recoupment of a $5.75 million Broadway capitalization in early May. The current cast of 'Just in Time' features a talented ensemble including Isa Briones from 'The Pitt,' Carrie St. Louis, Debbie Gravitte, Joe Barbara, Emily Bergl, Lance Roberts, and Caesar Samayoa.

Producers Tom Kirdahy and Robert Ahrens expressed profound gratitude for the show's success, attributing it to the electrifying audience response and the immersive nature of the production. They highlighted Bobby Darrin's extraordinary life and his ability to create magic on stage, emphasizing their privilege in continuing to share his story as the musical prepares to enter its second year on Broadway. Looking ahead, 'Just in Time' is slated to embark on a North American tour in June 2027, further extending its reach and legacy.
