Dani Evans Reflects on Her Post-ANTM Journey and Tooth Gap Controversy in New Docuseries

Comedian, writer, and actor who created "The Office" and writes provocatively on comedy and society.

In the recently released Netflix docuseries, "Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model," Dani Evans, the victor of the sixth cycle of the widely popular reality competition, revisits her journey through the cutthroat world of modeling. The series delves into the pressures she encountered, particularly the controversial demand from host Tyra Banks to modify her natural tooth gap. Evans' account sheds light on the difficulties faced by reality TV stars attempting to establish themselves in the high-fashion industry, and ultimately, her decision to step away from modeling to pursue an entrepreneurial path with her hat line, Monrowe.

Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, Dani Evans harbored aspirations of a modeling career in New York City after completing high school. However, the path seemed arduous until her brother suggested she audition for "America's Next Top Model." Initially dismissive, Evans eventually recognized the opportunity to escape her hometown. Her captivating presence and photographic prowess quickly made her a standout contestant, consistently impressing the judging panel. Yet, her appearance frequently became a focal point for critique, culminating in a pivotal moment involving her distinct smile.

A significant portion of "Reality Check" addresses the "tooth-gap controversy" from episode 8 of Cycle 6. During this segment, Tyra Banks and the judges expressed their belief that Evans and fellow contestant Joanie Dodds required cosmetic dental work. While Dodds complied, Evans was reluctant to close the gap between her front teeth. She articulated her desire to retain this unique feature to the dentist, resisting the pressure. The judging panel, however, insisted on the alteration, with Banks famously questioning Evans' marketability as a CoverGirl with a visible tooth gap. Evans recalls feeling as though her participation in the competition hinged on this decision, describing it as an intrusive manipulation. She eventually agreed to a partial closure of the gap, a compromise she now views as a personal violation made for the sake of the show's narrative. Banks, in the docuseries, offered an apology for the incident, citing industry pressures and a lack of foresight, but Evans vehemently disputes this, asserting that the show prioritized drama over her well-being.

Following her triumph in 2006, Evans quietly returned to Little Rock before officially relocating to New York City to launch her modeling career after her season aired. Her victory came with a lucrative contract with Ford Models, a feature in Elle magazine, and a substantial endorsement deal with CoverGirl. Despite these initial successes, Evans faced considerable obstacles. She recounts feeling abandoned by her agency, encountering a "cold" reception, and enduring months without securing casting opportunities. The prevailing sentiment was that her background in reality television hindered her acceptance in the elite fashion circles. This experience, she states, led her to terminate her contract and withdraw from the modeling industry, a choice she now considers "the best decision of her life." Since then, she has penned a book, "The Skinny on Getting In: An Inside Peek Into the Fashion World for the Aspiring Model," and founded Monrowe, a successful unisex hat brand, which she describes as her "love child," embodying her authentic self and passions.

The docuseries provides an intimate look into the often-unseen struggles of reality TV contestants and the lasting impact of their experiences. It highlights the power dynamics at play within the modeling industry and the personal sacrifices individuals are sometimes pressured to make. Dani Evans' journey underscores the importance of self-worth and authenticity, offering a compelling narrative of resilience and reinvention.
