A theatrical rendition of the classic novel "Imitation of Life" is set to debut Off-Broadway in the fall of 2026, featuring original music composed by the acclaimed artist John Legend. This new production promises to bring a fresh perspective to the enduring narrative, delving into complex societal themes that remain relevant today.
The upcoming musical draws its inspiration from Fannie Hurst's 1933 novel and its subsequent film adaptations. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage is responsible for the adaptation's book, while Liesel Tommy will helm the directorial duties. The creative team expressed their enthusiasm for reimagining the story for a contemporary audience.
Scheduled to open at The Shed's Griffin Theater, the musical explores the intertwined lives of two women, one Black and one white, as they navigate the challenges of motherhood within a deeply unequal society. The creators emphasized that while the original novel is a product of its time, its core discussions on race, social status, and gender continue to resonate powerfully in the present day. Legend, Nottage, and Tommy shared a joint statement highlighting the profound emotional impact of "Imitation of Life" and their collective joy in bringing this moving journey to the stage.
This marks a significant theatrical endeavor for John Legend, who has previously contributed to Broadway productions. His prior work includes composing a song for the 2017 musical "SpongeBob SquarePants" and serving as a producer for the 2017 revival of "Jitney." The production is a collaborative effort involving several entities, including National Black Theatre, Get Lifted Film Co. (co-founded by John Legend and Mike Jackson), Liesel Tommy's Crocodile Eyes, Universal Theatrical Group, and The Shed, among others.
The initial run of the musical is planned for a four-week engagement. Specific performance dates and cast announcements are anticipated to be revealed in the near future. This adaptation aims to captivate audiences with its poignant storytelling and a score that promises to be both contemporary and deeply emotive, continuing the legacy of a story that has long sparked contemplation on identity and societal structures.
