Despite previous reports of its shelving, creators of the acclaimed comic series "The Last Ronin" remain optimistic about a live-action movie adaptation. They suggest that the delay is merely a temporary setback, allowing for further development of the rich narrative universe. The ongoing expansion of the comic series, including new prequel stories and character arcs, is seen as a benefit that will contribute to a more comprehensive and engaging cinematic experience.
In November of last year, news circulated that Paramount's live-action, R-rated film adaptation of "The Last Ronin" comics, which portrays a grittier, alternate future for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, had been put on hold. This announcement disappointed many passionate fans who were eager to witness a more intense portrayal of Michelangelo's quest for retribution on the big screen. However, Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz, two of the principal minds behind the "Roninverse," maintain a positive outlook.
During a discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Eastman, who co-created "The Last Ronin" with Peter Laird, and Waltz, addressed the future of the film. Eastman stated, "I don't think the movie's off the table; I think it's just delayed." Their remarks coincided with the announcement of a "Training Day" prequel comic, focusing on Michelangelo and Casey Marie Jones. Eastman acknowledged that the franchise is currently undergoing a transitional phase due to Skydance Media's recent acquisition of Paramount, the studio responsible for the Turtles.
Eastman further expressed confidence, saying, "Speaking with all the folks at Viacom and Paramount and Nickelodeon who love the Turtles and really have done a fantastic job, whether it be the 2012 series to Mutant Mayhem, I don't think it will not happen." He highlighted the strong fan support for both "The Last Ronin" and the "Mutant Mayhem" series, emphasizing that the creators are not discouraged by the current situation.
The comic series "The Last Ronin," launched in 2020 by IDW Publishing, introduced a dystopian reality where Michelangelo is the sole surviving Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, driven by a mission to avenge his fallen brothers, Leonardo, Raphael, and Donatello, by confronting Shredder's grandson, the new leader of the Foot Clan. Subsequent comic releases, such as "The Last Ronin: The Lost Years," delve into Mikey's transformation into the Last Ronin and the emergence of a new generation of Turtles—Odyn, Moja, Uno, and Yi—who are mentored by Casey Marie Jones, the daughter of April O'Neil and Casey Jones.
The upcoming "Training Day" comic is set to explore Mikey's training of Casey Marie Jones, preceding a teased Part 3 installment at the conclusion of "Re-Evolution." This narrative expansion, according to Waltz, offers a distinct advantage for the film adaptation. He believes that the additional content will enrich the movie, preventing it from predating the comic series' storylines. Waltz also considered the broader economic climate, suggesting that studios may be waiting for more favorable conditions to launch such a significant project. Ultimately, the creators see this period as an opportunity to refine the core comic narrative, ensuring that the eventual movie is as compelling and rich as possible.
