Oscar-winning filmmaker and author whose work and commentary explore fantasy, horror, and cinema.

The Doha Film Institute's Qumra event, now in its twelfth year, is poised to host an impressive roster of international film luminaries. This unique initiative, designed to foster new and emerging cinematic voices, especially from the Arab world, brings together acclaimed artists for mentorship, workshops, and vital networking opportunities. The upcoming edition will feature prominent figures such as Mexican actors and filmmakers Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, French director Alice Diop, Moroccan auteur Faouzi Bensaïdi, and renowned composer Gustavo Santaolalla, all contributing their expertise to the development of future film projects.

Qumra, which translates to 'camera' in Arabic, serves as a crucial platform that merges elements of a creative workshop with a co-production market, and even incorporates aspects of a film festival. Its core mission, established by the Doha Film Institute (DFI), is to provide comprehensive support for first and second-time directors, predominantly those from Arab nations. The event facilitates meaningful connections between the burgeoning Arab film scene and the wider international film industry, ensuring that promising talents receive the guidance and exposure necessary to advance their careers.

The Doha Film Institute plays a significant role in propelling the independent Arab film industry forward, extending its support to include funding for Arab television series. The 2026 Qumra program is set to showcase a diverse array of high-caliber Arab films at various stages of production, alongside select television projects. This commitment underscores DFI's dedication to nurturing a vibrant and dynamic regional cinematic landscape.

Reflecting on the event's significance, Fatma Hassan Alremaihi, CEO of the DFI, emphasized that Qumra was established to ensure that emerging filmmakers not only receive support but are also truly recognized—artistically, professionally, and globally. She added that the presence of these esteemed masters at Qumra 2026 highlights the belief that generous mentorship can profoundly influence creative journeys and trajectories.

The selection of masters for Qumra 2026 includes individuals with multifaceted talents, a point highlighted by DFI artistic advisor Elia Suleiman. He noted the return of Gael Garcia Bernal, who was a master during Qumra's inaugural event, and pointed out that both Bernal and Luna bring diverse skills as actors, directors, and producers. Suleiman remarked on the value of having mentors who possess a broad understanding of various roles within the film industry, offering a holistic perspective to aspiring filmmakers. The event is scheduled to take place in Doha, the capital of Qatar, from March 27 to April 1.

The Qumra program, a flagship initiative of the Doha Film Institute, continues to be a vital incubator for cinematic talent, particularly focusing on filmmakers from the Arab region. By bringing together a mix of experienced mentors and emerging artists, the event fosters an environment of learning, collaboration, and creative exchange, helping to shape the future of global cinema. The diverse backgrounds and expertise of the selected masters promise a rich and invaluable experience for all participants.
