Quinta Brunson to Lead and Create 'Betty Boop' Film, Exploring the Icon's Legacy

Roger Ebert

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

Quinta Brunson, the acclaimed creator of "Abbott Elementary," is poised to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic animated character Betty Boop. In an exclusive revelation, Brunson's production company, Fifth Chance Productions, is partnering with Fleischer Studios to produce a feature film that will see Brunson both develop and star as the titular character. This ambitious project aims to explore the genesis and evolution of Betty Boop, examining the intricate relationship between the legendary character and her creator, Max Fleischer, against the backdrop of the creative and commercial pressures of the burgeoning animation industry.

The upcoming film marks a significant cinematic return for Betty Boop, as it will be her first leading role in a theatrical motion picture since her heyday in the 1930s. Born from Fleischer Studios' innovative "Talkartoons" series, Betty Boop transcended her initial poodle-like appearance to become a Jazz Age symbol and a pioneering animated female superstar. Brunson expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting Betty Boop's quiet yet profound influence on culture over nearly a century. She believes there's a deeper narrative to uncover, one that can be presented in a way that feels contemporary, insightful, and timeless, much like Betty Boop herself.

Mark Fleischer, the grandson of Max Fleischer and a key figure at Fleischer Studios, shared Brunson's excitement. He was particularly captivated by Brunson's unique vision for a film that would explore the dynamic between his grandfather and his creation. Fleischer highlighted Brunson's embodiment of Betty Boop's vibrant spirit, intelligence, wit, and empathy, suggesting that her portrayal will breathe new life into the character. This collaboration echoes the successful template seen with Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie's "Barbie," where a formidable female creator-star reimagines a beloved, decades-old female character through a modern lens.

Betty Boop, created in 1930, starred in over a hundred cartoons during her original run and has since maintained a global presence in fashion, beauty, and collectibles. Her enduring appeal places her among the most successful licensed classic characters in entertainment history. Meanwhile, Brunson continues to achieve critical acclaim for "Abbott Elementary," a mockumentary that has cemented her status as a leading voice in network comedy. Her achievements include being the first solo Black woman to win an Emmy for outstanding writing for a comedy series and the first to receive three Emmy nominations in a single year across writing, acting, and producing for a comedy. She further made history by becoming the first Black woman since 1981 to win the Emmy for outstanding lead comedy actress.

Fleischer Studios, under the leadership of Chairman and CEO Mark Fleischer, continues to expand the Betty Boop brand globally through its exclusive licensing agency, Global Icons. Brunson's Fifth Chance Productions, a female-led company, is dedicated to developing character-driven television and film, emphasizing diverse voices and universal narratives, making this collaboration a natural fit for both parties.

The convergence of Quinta Brunson's contemporary comedic genius and the timeless charm of Betty Boop promises a cinematic experience that will undoubtedly resonate with both longtime fans and new audiences. This project is poised to delve into the rich history of animation, the creative process, and the enduring power of a character who has left an indelible mark on popular culture, all while being infused with Brunson's signature wit and insightful storytelling.
