Prolific television creator ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal") and author on creativity and empowerment.

Locarno Pro's 'First Look' program, a cornerstone of the prestigious Locarno Film Festival's industry events, is poised to cast a spotlight on the burgeoning cinematic landscape of Uruguay. This year marks the 15th iteration of the initiative, which will run during the 79th Locarno Film Festival from August 5th to 15th, offering a unique platform for emerging talents from the South American nation.

This strategic focus, developed in collaboration with ACAU – Agencia del Cine y el Audiovisual del Uruguay, will feature six Uruguayan feature films currently in their post-production phase. These promising projects will be presented by their creators to a discerning audience of international sales agents, buyers, festival programmers, and representatives from post-production funding bodies. The selection underscores Uruguay's increasing visibility within the international festival circuit, building upon a history of successful Uruguayan productions and co-productions showcased at Locarno, including notable works such as 'The Enemies of Pain' (2014), 'Norberto's Deadline' (2010), 'The Guest Room' (2007), and 'El lugar del hijo' (2008), as well as co-productions like 'Kiss of the Spider Woman' (2025) and 'Severina' (2017).

Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, emphasized the importance of this geographical focus, stating that it represents a crucial broadening of horizons, especially at a time when fresh perspectives are urgently needed. Markus Duffner, director of Locarno Pro, further elaborated that this initiative is integral to their mission of nurturing exceptional films in their final stages and advancing the global careers of new filmmakers. Gisella Pevitali, president of ACAU, highlighted that Uruguay's prominent role in 'First Look' 2026 signifies a pivotal moment for their national cinema, acknowledging both the talent within the country and the positive impact of supportive public policies. She concluded that this recognition elevates Uruguay's standing on the international stage, establishing it as a valuable source of compelling content and a fertile ground for international co-productions within the diverse realm of Ibero-American cinema. Uruguayan producers have until May 6th to submit their projects, which must include a rough cut of at least 60 minutes, with the primary production company based in Uruguay. The selected projects and jury members will be announced in July, with the awards ceremony scheduled for Sunday, August 9th.

The collaborative spirit and dedicated support for emerging voices in cinema, exemplified by initiatives like Locarno Pro's 'First Look,' are vital for fostering a diverse and innovative global film industry. By providing crucial platforms for new narratives and talents, these efforts not only enrich the artistic landscape but also build bridges between cultures, offering audiences worldwide a window into different experiences and perspectives. This commitment to discovery and development ensures a vibrant future for storytelling through film, promoting understanding and appreciation across borders.
