Wheelhouse has officially completed its acquisition of Anomaly Entertainment, a production company recognized for its extensive work on popular unscripted programming, notably contributing numerous specials to the Discovery Channel's annual "Shark Week." This strategic integration is set to broaden Wheelhouse's production capacity and diversify its content portfolio, bringing together the strengths of both entities in the competitive entertainment landscape.

Wheelhouse Strengthens Unscripted Portfolio with Anomaly Entertainment Acquisition

In a significant development for the entertainment industry, Wheelhouse announced on May 27, 2026, its acquisition of Anomaly Entertainment. Founded in 2017 by seasoned producers Matthew Kelly and Michael Sorensen, who previously served as commissioners for Discovery Channel, Anomaly Entertainment has established itself as a prolific creator of unscripted content. The company is particularly renowned for producing over 40 "Shark Week" programs over the past nine years, including fan favorites such as "Shaq Does Shark Week," "Great White Abyss," "Jaws Awakens," "Legend of Deep Blue," "Jackass Shark Week," and "Shark Trip: Eat, Pray, Chum."

Beyond its deep-sea adventures, Anomaly Entertainment has a broad production footprint, developing content for a diverse range of networks and platforms, including TLC, ID, HGTV, Food Network, Netflix, HBO Max, ESPN+, and NFL Films. Their non-shark-related productions encompass a variety of genres, with titles like "KPop Shark Heroes" starring Ken Jeong and Rei Ami, "Rob Riggle: Global Investigator," "Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch," "Caught!," "The Visitors," "Code of the Wild," "Battle of the Beards," "McEnroe’s Places," and "Extraordinary Stories Behind Everyday Things." Currently, Anomaly is actively producing new series for Discovery, TLC, HGTV, and Food Network, alongside developing additional projects.

Brent Montgomery, CEO of Wheelhouse, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, highlighting the proven success of Kelly and Sorensen as both buyers and sellers in the industry. He noted the strong cultural alignment and the valuable new capabilities Anomaly brings to the Wheelhouse network, particularly their extensive collaborations with athletes, entertainers, and creative talents. Kelly and Sorensen echoed this sentiment, stating their search for a partner to facilitate strategic growth and emphasizing the synergistic vision shared with Wheelhouse. They aim to continue producing content that elevates talent, especially contemporary creators and sports figures, through authentic storytelling. Wheelhouse itself boasts a robust production history, with projects like Netflix's "Million Dollar Secret," "King of Collectibles," "Unknown Number: The High School Catfish," "America’s Sweethearts," and A&E’s "Duck Dynasty."

This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for both companies, promising enhanced creative output and expanded market presence in the ever-evolving entertainment landscape. The combined expertise is expected to foster innovative storytelling and greater opportunities for talent development across various media platforms.

This acquisition highlights the dynamic nature of the entertainment industry, where strategic mergers and acquisitions are crucial for growth and diversification. The collaboration between Wheelhouse and Anomaly Entertainment exemplifies how combining specialized expertise with broader operational capabilities can lead to a more robust and versatile content creation ecosystem. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and integrating complementary strengths to meet the increasing demand for diverse and engaging programming across multiple platforms. This move is likely to inspire further consolidation and strategic partnerships within the sector, as companies strive to expand their reach and influence.
