Actor Russell Andrews Reveals ALS Diagnosis in CNN Interview

Author and journalist whose work on culture, race, and history includes writing for Marvel's "Black Panther."

In a deeply moving interview on CNN, accomplished actor Russell Andrews, recognized for his performances in popular series such as 'Better Call Saul' and 'Insecure,' bravely disclosed his recent diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This revelation has shed light on the personal struggles faced by individuals battling this debilitating neurodegenerative condition, while also emphasizing the critical need for increased awareness and support within the entertainment industry and beyond.

The 64-year-old actor shared this significant personal news during an appearance on CNN's "The Story Is with Elex Michaelson." Accompanying him was his fiancée, fellow actress Erica Tazel, known for her role in 'Justified.' Andrews recounted that his diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disorder, which progressively impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, came in late fall of the previous year. He initially experienced symptoms such as pinched nerves and muscle twitching, which are recognized as common early indicators of ALS.

Andrews elaborated on the period leading up to his diagnosis, explaining that he initially attributed his symptoms to stress. He noted a stressful time during the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the SAG-AFTRA and Writer's Guild of America strikes in 2023, which led to a prolonged absence from work. During this time, he lost his health insurance, making it difficult to receive a proper and timely diagnosis for his condition. He recalled experiencing frequent pinched nerves, twitching, and an inability to perform routine tasks, such as holding cups, along with nocturnal sensations in his arms.

The actor also hypothesized a potential connection between his condition and his past as a collegiate football player, suggesting that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) might be a contributing factor. However, he acknowledged that a definitive link would only be established posthumously through brain studies. After work resumed and he regained health coverage, he promptly sought medical attention at Cedars-Sinai. Within a quarter of an hour, his primary care physician referred him to a neurologist, which eventually led to his current diagnosis.

Andrews has since become an advocate, collaborating with organizations like the ALS Network, which offers crucial resources and free care to those affected by ALS, in addition to supporting research for a cure. He recently traveled to Washington, D.C., engaging with political figures to raise awareness about the disease. His public disclosure also brings renewed attention to the impact of ALS, particularly following the recent passing of actor Eric Dane, known for 'Euphoria' and 'Grey's Anatomy,' from complications related to the disease earlier this year. Tazel expressed her unwavering commitment to Andrews, affirming her intention to proceed with their marriage despite the challenging news, highlighting their unconditional bond.

The candid interview serves as a powerful reminder of the human element behind chronic illnesses and the resilience of those affected. Andrews' and Tazel's decision to share their journey publicly offers a beacon of hope and understanding, fostering a more compassionate environment for individuals grappling with similar health challenges.
