Projeto Paradiso, a philanthropic organization dedicated to bolstering the Brazilian film industry, is organizing its third national gathering of the Paradiso Talent Network. This significant event will take place in April in Recife, a city rapidly gaining recognition as a vibrant center for Brazilian cinema. The announcement follows a highly productive showing at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and a notable presence at the Berlin Film Festival, where nine films backed by Projeto Paradiso are being showcased. This initiative underscores the organization's commitment to nurturing and promoting Brazilian cinematic talent on both national and international platforms.

Recife's ascent as a film hub has been considerably propelled by the acclaim of films such as Kleber Mendonça Filho's multiple award-nominated 'The Secret Agent,' which is set in the Pernambuco capital. The city is also home to other distinguished Brazilian filmmakers, including Gabriel Mascaro, director of the Silver Bear-winning 'The Blue Trail,' and Marcelo Gomes, known for 'Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures.' These achievements highlight Recife's growing influence and its capacity to produce critically acclaimed works.

The upcoming national meeting is anticipated to draw approximately 200 participants. This esteemed group will include members of the Paradiso Talent Network, advisory board members of Projeto Paradiso, key figures from Brazil's Northeast region, and several international guests who are yet to be announced. Now in its third iteration, this assembly provides a unique opportunity for professionals within Brazil's audiovisual sector, all of whom have previously benefited from Projeto Paradiso's support, to converge and collaborate, fostering a powerful synergy of talent.

Projeto Paradiso has been exceptionally successful in elevating Brazilian artistic talent on the world stage. The organization recently participated in the International Film Festival Rotterdam, accompanied by over a dozen members of its talent network. This follows the 2023 launch of the HBF+Brazil program, a collaborative effort between IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund, Projeto Paradiso, RioFilme, Spcine, and Embratur. This program specifically aims to support the early development phases of projects by emerging Brazilian filmmakers who are working on their second or third feature films.

This momentum has carried over to Berlin, where films developed through Projeto Paradiso's Incubator program are making their world premieres at a major A-list festival for the first time. The Incubator, which focuses on developing Brazilian fiction features, has notably produced two highly anticipated Berlinale titles: Grace Passô's directorial debut 'Our Secret' ('Nosso Segredo'), which was part of the 2021 cohort, and Allan Deberton's 'Gugu’s World' ('Feito Pipa'), developed in the 2020 edition of the program.

Grace Passô commended the Incubator, describing it as a benchmark for film project development in Brazil. She emphasized that the continuous support she received throughout the program was critical to bringing 'Our Secret' to fruition. Passô added that being part of a program that integrates skill development, craft enhancement, funding, and human connection was a transformative experience. She noted that artists are perpetually seeking environments where they can engage in thoughtful creation, thrive in the market, and pursue their artistic visions without compromising on innovation or challenging established norms.

André Araújo, the screenwriter for 'Gugu’s World,' highlighted the program's dedication to decentralization, recalling how he joined the initiative during the pandemic. This period, he noted, was marked by significant uncertainty for everyone, and particularly challenging for filmmakers residing outside of major cinematic centers like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Araújo explained that while writing is inherently a solitary endeavor, the Incubator fostered a genuine environment for exchange, both with fellow screenwriters and with mentors. He stated that the investment in the script and the screenwriter, recognized as fundamental to filmmaking, provided 'Gugu’s World' with the necessary time and structure to mature. Premiering at the Berlinale holds special significance, as it marks the film's transition from a deeply personal project to one that engages with diverse audiences, cultures, and perspectives. Beyond mere visibility, it offers the film the opportunity to circulate, inspire new connections, and forge innovative pathways.

Director Allan Deberton underscored the initiative's focus on cultivating collaborations, stating that his participation in the program facilitated connections that led to crucial co-producing partnerships. He expressed deep gratitude, noting that Deberton Filmes and Biônica Filmes united through Projeto Paradiso.

Josephine Bourgois, executive director of Projeto Paradiso, remarked on the particular significance of this moment for the Incubator, as it was the first program launched by the philanthropic initiative. She noted that seeing projects evolve from their initial developmental stages to premiering at a prestigious festival like Berlinale reaffirms the vital importance of sustained, long-term investment in creative processes and in Brazilian filmmakers. This approach, she concluded, effectively strengthens their careers from the very outset.

In addition to 'Our Secret' and 'Gugu’s World,' Projeto Paradiso is providing support for an impressive seven other Brazilian features being shown in Berlin through its Brasil no Mundo initiative. This program is specifically designed to enhance Brazil's presence at international film festivals and markets. Featured titles include Gabe Klinger’s 'Isabel,' André Novais Oliveira’s 'If I Were Alive,' and Marcelo Martinessi’s 'Narciso.' The organization is also actively participating in the Berlinale Co-Production Market, showcasing Lô Politi’s 'Apneia' as part of the Talent Project Market. This extensive engagement highlights Projeto Paradiso's far-reaching impact and its commitment to elevating Brazilian cinema globally.
