Prolific author of horror and suspense, who also writes extensively on the craft of writing and pop culture.

Shirley Jackson's chilling Gothic novel, 'The Haunting of Hill House,' is being reimagined for the theatrical stage, promising to bring its classic supernatural suspense to audiences across the United Kingdom. This brand-new adaptation, set to commence its tour in the autumn season, follows the success of the 2018 Netflix series, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Jackson's eerie narrative. The production delves into the psychological terror experienced by a group of paranormal investigators as they confront the unsettling phenomena within the infamous Hill House mansion, where curiosity quickly gives way to profound fear amidst strange disturbances.

UK Tour of 'The Haunting of Hill House' Stage Adaptation

The highly anticipated stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson's renowned horror novel, 'The Haunting of Hill House,' is scheduled to launch its UK tour on September 11 at the historic Salisbury Playhouse. The production will captivate audiences there until October 3. Following its initial run, the play will transfer to the distinguished Richmond Theatre, with performances from October 6 to October 10. The tour continues its journey across the UK, visiting Theatr Clwyd from October 13 to October 17, then moving to the grand Theatre Royal Brighton between October 20 and October 24. Subsequent stops include the magnificent Palace Theatre Manchester from October 27 to October 31, and the culturally significant Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse from November 3 to November 7. The haunting theatrical experience will culminate its tour at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, where it will run from November 10 to November 14. This adaptation is penned by Olivier and BAFTA award-winner Stef Smith and directed by the acclaimed Martin Constantine. Laurence J. Hyman, son of author Shirley Jackson, expressed his delight at this new iteration, highlighting Smith's ability to capture the novel's 'unsettling spirit.' The production is a collaborative effort by Wiltshire Creative in association with Theatr Clwyd, and presented by Mark Puddle, Alexander “Sandy” Marshall, and Patrick Myles. This ambitious project receives crucial financial backing from Arts Council England, ensuring a high-quality theatrical experience for all.

This theatrical undertaking of 'The Haunting of Hill House' invites reflection on the timeless allure of supernatural narratives and the profound impact of well-crafted horror. The adaptation not only provides a fresh interpretation of a beloved classic but also underscores the enduring power of storytelling to explore complex human emotions like fear, isolation, and the unknown. It serves as a potent reminder that the most terrifying horrors often reside not in the spectral but within the depths of the human mind, echoing Stef Smith's insightful observation about the deeply theatrical nature of Hill House and its exploration of human anxieties.
